View Full Version : Bonnet pins - pros and cons...

Since extending my bonnet I'm feeling a little nervous about my existing bonnet lock. I've been to several shows in recent years and seen damage caused to cars where the bonnet lock failed - strangely all occasions were on cars with bonnet extensions...

So I'm thinking about getting a set of bonnet pins - however I want to know what the pros and cons of these are.

There are 2 I can think of -

1 - theyre pig ugly but look pretty good
2 - they provide easy access to the bonnet (although it will be alarmed with switches)

Can I have your opinions on them please - and if you have some what do you think of them...

Oh - and the bonnet will be lifted up using bonnet lifters - not sure whether this will make a difference to fitting bonnet pins...

anyone got any pics of how they've mounted them for the boot and bonnet, just wondered if people have put padlocks through them to stop little erchins from getting in.
thanks

myne are fine! although my car has been in the garage for 3 yearslol

had a set on my old gte for about 2years and they never rusted, they were sparcos aswell! most stainless will show signs of rusting in the end though. seems both times ive fitted them i have put them in the worst place where the bonnet goes to double skinlol

do you still use you bonnet release as well??

and has anyone done the boot?

i was thinking about doing the bonnet on 4 pins, with no hinges or locks, thats why i was wondering about the padlocks :)

i dont use my bonnet release as its playin up, all ive done is removed the big pin that keeps ur bonnet shut.

my bonnets gone rusty but the pins n are fine, alittle scratched but still look **** hot.

yeah - I'd remove the bonnet pin but leave the catch in place. I'm going to get some.

yes i suppose pins are more safer at least you know your bonnets not going to fly up and bend your hinges like it did to me last time lol

i would definatly recomend getting them on your car! i have them on mine and they arent the best looking mod in the world but i certainly feel alot safer when im driving at higher speeds! could save a few quid aswell if there is a risk of it popping up and smashing the screen! as for locks i still have to pull the bonnet catch for mine to open so its probably worth just leaving it on for added security!

Tbh mate bonnet pins are good. if your worried about locking the bonnet keep the original mech but use the pins as well.

If using pins only i reccomend mounting the pins onto a square peice of material first then bolting that to the bonnet. As when giving it large the pins will be under force pulling the bonnet upwards.

Anyhow just my verdict.

Ade - I think that this type of bonnet pin would suit your car better than the usuall kind. They do start to look tatty very quickly, whereas these are flush fit and alot neater. You can also get locking ones :)

Although alot more expensive :wtf:

Dar - those look really good. the ones Baxter posted on page one are probably the ones I'll go for though (they have solex locks on them and are nice and compact).

May consider those though too - look V professional...

I've just invested in a set since my little accident !!

Just a quick Q on fitting them ....

both times ive fitted them i have put them in the worst place where the bonnet goes to double skinlol

Wheres best to mount them ? was gonna fit the threaded bar part thru the 2 holes on either side of the slam panel but i'm thinking this will leed to the problem above ?
Any pics of where there mounted on the slam panel ?

Cheers, Rich

Pros - When I run people over it cuts them up something bad
- They make my car look it would be at home jumping over country road hump back bridges

Cons - I always trap my fingers in them

myne are where you said in the 2 holes on the slam panel! (also good for holding things like masking tapelol ) its not that bad to go through the double skin just takes abit more time marking things out properly! as in that location the 2nd skin is on a diagnol!

Cool, might just cut thru the 2nd skin with a hole saw so theres plenty room to play with to mount the catches, bonnets gotta be painted anyway so it'll all get covered over.
