what peoples thoughts on welding a plate on the inner wings infront of the struts?

depends what your running

if ur tunning a LET the more plate the better, if your not then no point
i personally wouldnt bother, the chassis leg takes the stress, not the plate, and the corsa has nothing there just a plastic liner.

going to be using a 1.6 16v for b-roads and been told i should do it but recon it should be ok coz its still a small block.

you only need to plate the area in that pic if it's allready rotten through, or if you're smoothing the seams out.
