Ignition wire colour

After i decided to give my mk2 nova pretty much a rebuild i thought i shoudl wire up my stereo propaly. After hours of trying and many blown fuses i found out that the thick brown wire wasnt the ignition live, and it was the thin black one? I always though black wires were generally earths???

Basically next time ill have to dig out the haynes manual somewhere in the shed!

But is the ignition live supposed to be black??

yeh mate black wire goe's to the ignition and the brown wire earths it to the car
