Head gasket-- i think

I think my head gasket has gone, the car is constantly loosing water and over heating, and stalls for no apparent reason, exhaust fumes are white and steam like, and when i lloked at the dip stick it was slightly warped (due to the ecess heat) and covered in air bubbles, Any way more to the point if it is the head gasket is it an easy DIY job for two idiots with a haynes manuel? and is it worth getting the head skimmed?
