My fuel consumption has been exceedingly ****e of late
Nova '92 1400SR, 100K, Powerflow backbox, K&N bolt-on filter (relatively standard, alesios, sub/amp etc etc slightly overweight maybe)
i run to and from work every day (13miles each way - country B-road) and at night i head back into town to spin about (slagging to a minimum please)
i zero'd the odometer when i filled up (at fuel light flashing on digi-dash) and 40-50 miles later the fuel light is on again
at least ?10 a day on fuel.
getting a bit costly
is this normal?

oh and its 95p a litre up here.......
I make that about 22mpg... If I drove my 1.2 hard the consumption used to drop to about 20-25mpg.

Same here, only in the current tense.

so is this normal fuel consumption for town and country driving?
my B-road average speed is 70mph (private road of course:thumb:wink wink nudge nudge)

ata steady 70mph in 5th gear (f13cr)
In that case, I'd say you're eating up a bit much fuel. 70mph in 5th should be pretty economical; although I guess the round town pimping in the evening isn't helping...
Sounds like the ghey autochoke sticking on the Pierburg carb to me.
If i drove my 1200 flat out, i'd still get about 32Mpg, good ole injection hey :)

change 5th gear to wr one, 30 min job, well worth it, solve all problems

Somethings wrong if you're getting 25 mpg from that car, unless you live at the redline in every gear.

My 1.2 seems to burn more than it should too
lol when we give it stick in my mates vectra v6 it goes to about 7-8 MPG!

Assuming petrol being 95 pence per litre...
?35 = 36.8 litres
36.8 litres = ~8.2 gallons
250 miles on 8.2 gallons = 30.5mpg
My 1.2 carb gets about 140 miles to ?20 of petrol (99p per litre) for a weeks worth of mixed driving, mostly chinese delivery, some 20+ mile runs, which is about 26mpg. On a long run i'll get 200 miles to ?20 at 70mph - which is about 36mpg. I'm guessing the carb might be out a bit, although it is driven reasonably hard.
My old 1.5 straight deisel novavan got about 110-120 miles on ?10 lol

If I'm driving 'economically ie in 4th/5th most of the time I can do 50 miles and to a quarter tank. But when I'm giving her a bit of stick it can use about quarter of a tank in about 20 miles, mind you I have twin 40's etc lol

i reckon the auto-choke is stuffed too as it WILL NOT idle in the mornings

would it not be more simple to remove the filter and see if the auto choke is infact stuck on before you go spending your drug money on a new carb?

appologise for the drug money, my english is not good. you will find the choke butterfly in the throat of the carb, normally at the top, if this is closed the choke is on, try holding it open with wire/string/spagetti etc and see if it idles better when warm

PSML @ this chap, as if you didn't know what you were saying then lol I read your 1.2 tuning post and anyone who can talk about the ins and outs of engine internals in a foreign languge, in the detail you did 'proves' your English is good enough.
