Guys, my car has a slight problem that has me and a few others totally stumped. (Nova 1.6GSi early spec 78k miles)

If I have been out for a long drive and say come home and switch the engine off for 5-10 minutes..When I come back to start it again the idle is way off and lumpy - like at abour 500rpm...Any ideas? Anyone else suffered this?

So far I have tried replacing airflow meter and timing ECU (on top of airflow meter), all the temp sensors on the engine, plugs, leads, different fuel, injector cleaner etc etc. Still no joy. The only thing that has not been replaced is the oil temp sensor - I tried disconnecting it and the ECU immediately threw and error code - so surely if this was buggered it would throw an error with it connected?!?

My next port of call is the fuel injection relay - anyone had a problem with these?

Oh and when I drive along at a constant 1500-2000rpm the engine feels like it is kangarooing...I originally thought this could be due to vacuum pipes being split - some were but this has been rectified now. Could it be CO?

Cheers if anyone has any ideas...Ben.

Have you tried replacing fuel line or filters?

I would take the car to a rolling road garage. They can do all sorts of diagnostics, and Im sure they could point you in the right direction. My GTE does something on those lines.... so if you find out let me know!

Hmm..not tried replacing the fuel filter was last replaced in 1998...Certainly not touched the fuel lines.

One other thing, could it have anyhting to do with the FSE boost valve (already fitted)?

Lee, I am beginning to wonder if this is gonna be the only option...Could be a trip to Courtenay Turbos. I'll let you know though.

Cheers, Ben.

It sounds like your auxiliary air valve opens when your motor is actually warm.

Whoopass! :D

Its supposed to be open to let more air through when the engine is cold, and gradually close as the motor warms up. Sometimes they dont close properly when the car is actually warm, due to expansion and sticking. :D

Forgot to mention that I replaced that too - reason being the old one didn't open at all (even when I passed 12v across it). I am beginning to wonder about the fuel injection relay - according to the wiring diagram in Haynes this relay supplies a signal to a few things - one of which is the supplementary air valve - I suspect that the new one still doesn't open when cold in the mornings. I am gonna prove the latter once and for all tomorrow morning when I take it off still plugged in and start the car...Thing is that if I start the car from cold (lumpy if really cold) and leave it until fan cuts in the idle starts at about 1000 - 1100rpm (assuming its a but chilly) then as the temp needle reaches the first mark it drops to 600 - 800 (depending on the temp) I think this must be the same warm starting prob...When up to normal temp idle is 900 - 950 (right?)

I'm gonna keep thinking about this one. Cheers, Ben.

Okay I just checked the air valve - it opens and closes properly...spins round when cold then gradually closes...rolling road here we come.

Thanks guys.

sorry if this sounds stupid!!
could it be one of three things?
1. air cleaner
2. blown gasket
3. faulty thermostat

only a sudgestion cause youve tried a hell of a lot of things sorry if its way off guys

Hmm dunno about those - the airfilter (K&N) is about 1.5 yrs old...it doesn't overheat, use oil or water - so I guess it can't be any of those...Cheers anyhow...BTW, I have adjusted the FSE boost valve down (only a little) and the car starts and runs properly so the fuel pressure was an issue..but still not sure about the warm starting...I am gonna have a fiddle tomorrow with the multimeter..so fingers crossed.

thought id mention k and n cause my one has been making my car sound and run rough and its only been on for about 8 months.

i am new to car scene but would your inlet manifold gasket use up oil and water? if no could this be the problem?

Unfortunately some w@nker on the M20 has halted any plans of a rolling road for me!! He drove over a roadworks sign laying around which promptly got sucked up under his car and smashed onto mine...that'll be a new wing mirror/bonnet/windscreen/bumper/headlight oh and lots of paint ar5e. I am not happy at all. Especially when he tried to drive off!! Big mistake that was - foot to the floor in fifth flashed to pull over but still no joy. I got his number and called the police..watch this space (and just a few months after having it resprayed) I think I am gonna go and cry...

<sob>

Yep me too..and he better not deny it!! If he does then the police will have to look through untold amounts of video footage to prove he was even there...

I'm gonna have to absorb the cost of the repairs and wait for the insurance company to sort itself out...damn!

Let us know about the engine prob though ;)

There are so many tossers out there!! I cant believe he tried to drive off!! Good job you've got a good car to keep up!! Well all the best Ben, I hope that 'tosser' gives you the money you require to get your machine back on the road!
