View Full Version : A Minor Rant

I was thinking last night about these novas that come up for sale (quite a few recently) for ?3-4k.....

Sorry, but I just cant see why someone would buy one for that sort of money.... I can understand if it had some really expensive parts (Brett's) on it etc, but there have been some that are just REALLY nice, and not much else.

A case in point is that I have seen one sell recently which is a bit of a legend in the Nova community which sold for a few ????, which is fine. It was VERY clean and an awesome car.... BUT the new owner has sold/is selling the best bits off it!!

WHY?? Just buy a decent shell and bolt on the expensive bits after!

Sorry. I am having a rant. I dont really care that much. I am bored.:)

IMO if a Nova is an absolute minter, and totally restored, then it's just as good as a modern car which would easily be worth a few grand second hand (minus a few luxuries). :)

Having said that I wouldn't pay ?3-4k for a Nova either. lol

Stop moaning will :P

your like me fella, A nova is a nova. Its not worth mega mega money. The only way a nova is worth money is if the parts which made it IE engine, suspension, wheels etc would cost you less to buy the nova and strip it and use them on your own shell.

My opinion, i'd rather not spend anything more than 1k on a nova and even then that would have to be **** hot. Now, mk1 escorts, golfs, astras or even a nova sport now that would tempt me.

even a "mint" nova is just a nova at the end of the day. its no 205gti/golf/escort... its just a vauxhall fiesta and they are most definatley not going up in value (bar the few tasty concours xr2's) lol

the astra is rare round my way lol, all of them here are 5 door "sports, so a 3dr sri is a novelty to see lmao. meh its not my car so its not mine to defend lol

I'd spend about ?500 tops on something like a 1.2 or SR, maybe a little more for a GTE/GSi. There's a std 1.5TD for sale not far from me for ?995, hmmmmno. If it was ?300 then maybe.

At the end of the day it could be said that all Novas arent worth sh*t. But anything is worth whatever anyone will pay for it.

Therefore if I wanted say Mark Beesons Nova that much, if I would pay ?8000 for it. In my eyes it is worth ?8000 & if I paid him ?8000 for it, it would have been worth ?8000.

No different to when ebay items spiral out of control, the point where you stop bidding is where you feel the item is not worth anymore, but those that continue bidding obviously feel the item IS worth that much.

Just out of interest I've spotted a black 2 door saloon.... looks ok but I was some distance away.

Obvously the details are mega sketchy but how much do you reckon that would be worth...

a) if its a rusty ****ter
b) if its fairly good
c) if its a minter.

craig green
16-08-06, 12:18 PM
If any of the above have MOT, upwards of ?200. Even a Minter could be found for that money. At the end of the day Novas are bargain buckets now unless owned by an enthusiast who wants top dollar for them.

Welsh Dan
16-08-06, 12:20 PM
a) ?10
b) ?200
c) ?500

EDIT: I'm hoping to pay ?200 ish for my next shell, but if an absolute minter turned up with everything I'd want done to it, I'd pay considerably more.

This is clearly aimed at me....

The leather interior and the wheels? How are they the best parts? They are the only bits I'm selling and only because my new wheels and new interior are BETTER.

The new wheels are 15" so should make the car quicker acceleration and i can run some 185/45/15" tyres from Germany for a slight stretch.

I'm just shy of 6foot tall but I only have short legs (30" inside leg) and I can't get comfy in the nova with current interior.

So you would prefer for me to leave the car as it was?

Would you have preferred it if I'd left the engine bay scruffy with wiring everywhere?? What if I left the front grille hanging off like it was????

What about the RUST? should I have left that?

Perhaps I should decorate my house in a style you would like? Maybe you can pick my clothes? Because not everyone likes the same.

I love my car, but the wheels and interior don't make it the great car it is....

Err, not quite!!!!!

It's no fun buying clothes though. I wear a 34 waist jean/trouser with a 30" leg (Don't exist! Have to have every pair altered!)

Ben took out the engine because it was dead. It was re-built and fitted to a Caterham.

So what attracted you to that particular Nova? Colour?

I dont know the car, so am not getting on a tall horse about it, I just am trying to understand the motivation.....

The wheels imo, were what really set it off, and looked good against the green.... as far as I can see its a green XE Nova... please educate me.

A car is only worth as much as what someone will pay for it and I believe there are quite a few people (myself included) who would happy spend 4, 5, 6, 7K on a Nova. If you can justify spending the money...... Why Not

If it wasn't aimed at me, who was it aimed at????

Anyway, the reason I wanted that car is because I saw it when it was a white standard GSI. Then it got speedlines. Then it got lowered. Then it got courtenay no. plates. Then it got 256mm discs etc etc etc

Garry Hope (who's car it was) used to come to the NW PNG meets with Andy Horrocks back in late 96/early 97 and they made big talk about what was gonna be the BEST nova in the UK.

The white one was stripped, and leathered, and valver'd, and resprayed pearl green (Custom mix based on Vx Rio Verde)

Featured in Max Power and was indeed, the best Nova in the UK at the time....

THEN it was entered into PNG national day concourse in 1998 and won (Only lost 1 point-for grit on the carpet mat!)

Then it was at York, drag racing, then at Bruntingthorpe Nova day for REVS and I witnessed all these things and was inspired by this car and others to build my own Nova.

In the meantime, the car was tuned higher, different brakes, strengthening kit, chassis stitch welding, another respray and further fine tuning before it was bought by Ben.

I always envied Garry for having the cash and the idea's for the car, and loved the fact that Ben was an enthusiast and looking after the car. I loved watching it evolve, much the same way that I watched "Fearless"'s rusty rocket, Joffy's, Brett Warburtons, Nick Caro's, Ian Storey and Phil Lofthouse's from standard-ish to fully blown show cars, one and all.

Now this is where I should say that K95 was my favourite and I dreamed of the day I could buy it, but it's not true. The truth is, I bought it on a whim after missing out on another spec nova. One I have only just mentioned.....

The truth is that I heard that Nick Caro was selling his SBD TB'd Nova to fund a Porsche Boxter, and that he only wanted ?6000 for it. It was on pistonheads for ?6000 so I emailed him. The problem was that someone from Ireland had said that he would give him more than that, so Nick said he wanted to hold out for that better offer, because the guy was coming over to PVG to see it and make an offer.

Disappointed, I accepted that ?6000 was my limit and I couldn't justify spending more (even though the engine spec was better) and logged on here the same night to see K95 in the forsale section for less than half the price that Nick was now asking for his car. I'd had a big bonus in April for selling loads of new cars in March so I said "F0CK IT" and bought it!

Jack

What gets me is the people who ask silly money for std novas, or those with few "mods" - e.g. the for sale forum at the moment has a 1.3SR for ?1500, and a bent 1.0 for ?500...

Nick
17-08-06, 07:49 PM
At the end of the day, if you like a car, then it's up to you about how much money you decide to offer for it !

it all depends on your tastes, sentimental reasons e.t.c

I think somethings wrong if you get worked up, and worried about other people spending their own money on cars that aren't anything to do with you lol

Will F
18-08-06, 10:01 AM
Well thats fine then, thanks RJM.

And Nick I wasnt worried or concerned and I know its not anything to do with me, but it is an opinion and I am pretty sure that I am allowed to express them on a 'forum'

I just wanted to understand the motivation which has been explained now.

It is not something I would do, but who cares about me?

I am from the school of thought that you buy a good base and build on it to your own taste. The fact that I dont want to spend any money on that 'base' is neither here nor there.

;)

I dont understand these high price tags some ppl put on for a nova, ur talking about 3-4k, but theres one in the for sale section and hes asking for 7k (yes, a SEVEN!)

Dont get me wrong, yes its a nice motor, but i only paid 1500 for mine and i got sooo much more out of it, including head unit, spkrs, bucket seats, harnesses, boot install etc.......his motor interiors just standard!

Doesn't look standard to me, its retrimmed in leather & alcantara. Not my cup of tea but its far from standard and probably cost a lot more than a couple of cheap buckets and some harnesses.

K95 is a nice car having seen it in the flesh recently, paintowrk is excellent. Will probably get shot down for this but I really think the wheels and the engine let that car down. Don't like gold wheels (liked the look of them in anthracite on the photoshop, sold now so irrelevant anyway) and a standardish XE does nothing for me (but neither does a throttle bodied XE either).

As you can see from this thread everyone has a different opinion on most things.

i personaly think spending that kind of money on cars is a bit silly. but who am i?? i do think the black nova for 7k may be over priced but thats for me! i simply cant afford that car as much as i would love to own such a nice car! now if we start talking about europauls nova (thats how i know the car) then i would probly rack up every penny i could get my hands on just to own that car. i think it just depends on the your personal taste and how much you want that car. does any1 here know the paul with the euro nova? or do u know the spec of his car? and can u put a price on it?

I personally am a big fan of K95. Always one of my favourites.

Its always a personal thing. People would probabually slate whot i have doen to mine, but hey it my car and do what i like.

Personally i loved those Raceline RL7 wheels. Rare as sh*t now to.

7k is alot of money expecually for a Nova but if they can get that for them then fair play. I know if i ever sold mine i would want that sort of figure.

Maybe I worded it slightly wrong, like the wheels just not the colour of them, what can i say though i'm a sheep with Speedlines.

I think you would be justified in asking for that sort of figure for yours as I would rate it higher than Brett's old car, probably the most complete of all the Nova's out there.

and a standardish XE does nothing for me (but neither does a throttle bodied XE either).

TBH I probably won't ever drive K95 more than a couple of thousand miles a year, and don't need any more power than appx 170bhp so a higher spec engine would be wasted on me
