odd how its only up hill - suggests the fuels running away from the engine back down the pipe?

Fuel pump problem?

could be the end float in your carb (sticky valve), my mates 1.2 had the same problem only died up hill. gave his carb a good rebuild and clean and it was fine.

would be end float as said, also, a hamfisted ammateur may have had carb apart, and snapped one of the bottoms of the jets, and maybe up hill or with quick acceleration the fuel moves to the back of the carb and jet cannot suck fuel, or it moves to the back cutting off the end float too soon!
