you can get a new straight cut setup from quaife or another company in the red tweeks catologue. tbh id not bother with one for an everyday car.

you can pick (genearlly) your gear ratios. and they usually wind up being very close to keep you in the narrow power band of a high revving race engine etc.

they tend to be straightcut as its easier to machine them up than helical gears.

A straight cut box will usually take more power than the equivilant vauxhall box (f15 / f20 etc) i'm sure you don't loose as much power through the transmission aswell.

theres a bit of a write up on straight cut boxes in this months total vauxhall i think

you'll be looking at circa ?3,000 for a new straight cut box

You're both right:

The price varies depending on what spec you want.

I have a straight cut synchro Quaife F20 box. The ratio's are much closer so it stays in the power band, downside is on a motorway crusing at about 70mph your doing 4500rpm!!

A standard F20 box will loose about 25% of engine power through the transmission, where the straightcut only looses about 15%. When you have a 200bhp engine this 10% is alot to gain.

As a daily drive dont even consider it. I now drive with ear plugs as the noise from the straight cut gears.

As for cost the gear kit alone was about ?1500 + vat then you need some machineing inside the box, then put it all together. Total cost about 2-2500k!
