Actually, the original "number of the beast" is 616, not 666 ;)

Its often referred to as 666 due to an alternate (for "alternate" read "not historically correct") spelling of the person's name who was orignally considered "the beast". 666 stuck as its an easier number to remember than 616, and was copied on as the Bible was re-copied and re-written throughout the ages.

Its also not representative of the devil himself, but as one who is devilish or has traits of the devil; i.e. an evil human being.
