Some people will already have seen this from other forums or the WIP threads.

Here we have my Latest purchase. A 1990, 1.4 L Vauxhall Nova. It?s done under 500 miles between every MOT, Just 9 miles a week since new. Totalling 8418 genuine miles.

The Elderly male first owner gave it to his sister in 1992, and from then until 2006, she wrote down the miles upon every fill of petrol, the price of the petrol and the date when filled. It?s shocking that 20.1 litres of fuel cost her ?10 in 1992!! Wish it was that cheap now.

The pictures below detail just how genuine and clean the car is. It?s absolutely shocking that a Nova can last 16 years and remains in such good condition.

However I bought the car for a purpose, and that?s to build a new Nova Turbo. I?ve sold the shell from NDZ 1331, and kept all the good parts. (this wasn?t planned, but it makes more sence using this shell than using my existing one with the smoothed bay etc)

I cant keep the REG NDZ 1331 however, as i would need to insure both cars before the MOT runs out, tax both etc and i just cant justify spending that money. I may just get a nice custom REG when the car is finished.

The 1.4 Engine from this is for sale ? But will most likely be sold somewhere local.

Its a new projext. Instead of turboing the nova in my sig, i'm using all its parts to build this immaculate shell into a turbo.

A LET? Or you gonna do a gsi turbo or something?

LET, 6 speed.

Its basically to reshell this: http://www.novaload.net/forum/viewfeaturecar.php?ref=2395

I had already started to fit the turbo to that, but then spotted this beauty on ebay and thought it made more sence. As when its finished i want it to last.

I was going to fit the LET to it, its stripped to a bare shell in the garage. Seen this minter on ebay and thought it made more sence to build all my bits into a "new" shell.

So this will most likely look the same as NDZ, but have the LET. Will have a new colour and interior too.

Jesus christ, mint beyond belief, went for more than i would be prepared to pay tho, but just look at that bay

What are your plans, apart from the LET.
Mk2 front? Or staying with mk1 etc?

Wasn't this one off Ebay?

Just I'm sure I've read about the noted milage and petrol filling!

Absolute minter mate, I'd imagine it would be almost impossible to get one in better original condition than that!

I'd thought about GTEing it, but i'm just going to style it as the old one was styled.

It went for more than i was prepared for to be honest, all because some woman wanted it as her first car. She kept out bidding me. She also kept ringing the bloke telling him she'd come pick it up asap if i messed him about. If she didnt bid i would have got it for about ?900.

Well guys - NDZ 1331 is officially dead in my eyes. Its sold to the Lynch brothers (local hillclimbers) and is being used to reshell there rallycar. Really happy about this as i wont see it on the road again, and it will hopefully bring them loads of success.

Following on from building the 1.4 into my daily driver, this 1985 1.2L with 13k genuine miles will now be the base for the nova turbo. The end product wont change, but this way i have a nicer daily drive.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/000_0034.jpg
Updates will follow as i strip it.

--------------------------------------

Now that the runabout is totally finished. Its time to concentrate on the turbo project. Big thanks to Alister for giving me his spare cool running thermostat.

Well folks... tiny update, doing a bit of pre-christmas spending, and thats all i can afford until after x-mas!

Mount to weld to the chassie leg, and bracket to mount for 6 speed box.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/6speed.jpg

Front engine bracket to drivers chassie mount, and rear spacers, to space the engine across.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/XE-LET.jpg

And finally, the Chris astley (or harry hockley copy) Chassie strengthning kit. Loads in there, didnt remove it all.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/platingkit.jpg

Next update will be a trial fitted engine, and welded up bay.

Tiny update today, spent most the day clearing out the garage, I've now stripped the LET of its inlet, and bolted the 6 speed on.

Should be easy to trial fit it now in the coming weeks when i get a lend of an engine lift. Then its off to Steven Gault for a rebuild.

Also notice the lovely storage boxes bought to try and make this a tidier build!

Fancied a new challange, had it stripped ready for the turbo conversion, but then saw the low mileage one on ebay and it made more sence to do it with a stunning shell. The 1985 one i'm now using i bought with 4k on the clock and its absolutely stupidly clean, and so needs no repair at all for the rebuild. The low mileage one i bought with the intention of turboing is now a GTE rep that i drive everyday.

Well, its stripping time!

My folks are going to england at the weekend, so all the important bits people have bought from me had to be stripped off ready to be shipped over. This is also prime opertunity to trial fit the LET (coming in next week/2)

Please do now look at the below pics if you hate me for ripping apart a mint, original nova.

Just back from the garage! - The floors not so mint now, covered in mud dust from the car lol.

Me and my dad have been rushing to strip off all the bits i'm selling for thursday when he leaves for england to see his mum. I've swapped the axel over to my rear disc beam from NDZ 1331, just so i can throw some speedlines on and measure how much arch work needs done (hopefully very little as i want complete arches)

The brake servo and fuel tank are now off too, and once again no nasty supprised, still minty mint. Should be awesome once its dipped and e-coated next year.

Fingers crossed i can borrow an engine lift this weekend and trial fit the LET and sort the mount for the F28.

Been trial fitting the loom tonight, just to see wheres best to route it so its not showing all over the place. Some of it seems a little damaged so i might source another. Can you still get LET looms new from vaux?

Offered up the inlet, the fuel rail, loom and turbo. Think i'm definatly going to have a removeable slamm panel for better access, as its pretty tight!

i think they look better with slam panel not cut, just a bit tidier, with the kkk there is no real need to unless you want the extra space,

anything more than standard kkk size turbo and its best to cut as you will be tight for room to get everything in

I'd have a look at the loom, see whats damaged on it, might be alright and be something that doesn't need wiring into the nova loom. Pretty sure theres some spare wires that you dont need in a nova.

about ?1200 for Autronics, Keith aasked about new LET looms from vauxhall, as Kev says it would be better in the long run, I dont think that the cost difference would be much, then consider the tuning potential and what it would cost to get EDS software to similar power not to run as well as the autronics.

Looking great Keith, keep it up

If you want a loom making Keith then I know a guy that would do a pukka job. Price would be about ?400 with all new connectors included. He has done several cosworth looms for me and they are awesome, I'll dig out a pic.

Why use aftermarket management ? Just stick with the moronic and speak to Stu @ Motorsport Developments for a live mapping session.

Much better than the EDS or EVO chips.

Regarding the slam panel it is much easier to have it removed for when working on the engine, but it does looks miles tidier with it left untouched, knowing how nice you keep your novas Keith I would attempt to leave the slam panel in situ and work round it.

Jonlem
07-12-06, 06:07 PM
Yep the loom is bloody awesome mate, his work is A1.

Live mapping on a cossy is approx ?600, but I think thats over 3 days everything is looked into. cold start etc..

Best to look through his website really and drop Stu a email about any enquiries.

He can crack just about any ecu now so no need to upgrade to an aftermarket ecu unless your building something completely mad.

The Inlet and turbo were discustingly dirty lol. So since the weather was slightly better today, i went and steam cleaned them both. The inlet could still do with some autosol to remove some of the dirt, but until the engines rebuild it makes it cleaner to work at.

Turbo came up excellent, and will only now need a quick rub over to make it 100%.

Should be taking the engine out next weekend. And the strengthning to the shell is scheduled for Jan.

I just got the wishbones back today from my neighbour, they've been plated at the bottom to box them in and add strength. I also asked him to put in two small tubes where the bolts go, to prevent the box section collapsing when under pressure from the bolts.

The ball joint will run on top (usually inside the section) and the tie bar below (to clear the gearbox)

I send the old turbo off to Universal turbos for a recon. I went for a stage 1 hybrid, which runs a larger bearing, compressor wheel and better flowed internals.

Also opted for a new actuator to cope with the added increase in PSI.

Mmm ... Shiney bits, i've just fiitted one of them flywheels on mine, seems to be ok, i had to drill out the 6 mounting holes on the clutch plate tho as the mounting studs are bigger then the origionals, drilled them out to 8mm.
Yeah the lugs to suit the POT flywheel are just bolted on, cant see it causing any probs tho.
Also fitted an Equal length shaft at the same time, doesn't torque steer anymore than it did on std power without the shaft than it does on Phase 2 with the shaft ... so might of made a difference ?
Keep up the good work anyway.

Well I collected the shell today at around 11am. I'd been up on thursday and friday all day, to clean all the seams and help Willy Semple (Pete_SRI's dad) get on with the welding.

First off was the fitting of the Harry Hockley style Strengthning plates, supplied by Chris Astley (cheers!). We were both very impressed with the kit, it fitted perfectly and was very easily welded in.

Now that the shells back I set about removing the steering rack and the complete suspension and axel, as I now need to prime all the areas to prevent them rusting before the shell go's to Dudley to get Dipped and E-coated.

With Andy Bishop sorting out our intercoolers, its come to my attention that to enable us to get the most amount of room, we've all had to trim the front panel on our novas here:

An update when i get that sorted. Just under a month now until our trip to england to get it dipped :)

I've finished trimming the front panel now. Just a little more work needed. I have to cut some holes out to fit the grill as the front panel doesnt accept a Mk2 grill! (trust me to use such an old shell lol)

Also picked up a fair few parts from vauxhall. Fuel pump holder, new cast exhaust section for the turbo, some fixtures and fittings.

New plug cover, want it powder coated red. And inlet top hat gasket for when i get my enlarged top hat.

Was out tonight getting the grill to fit. Had to drill out the holes and shape them to accept the Mk2 Grill as it was a very early mk1 nova which didnt have the holes.

Well, this may come as a supprise but i've decided to not continue with rebuilding my C20LET engine, and have just went and bought a brand new one from Vauxhall. It will arrive on a metal caged palet in about two weeks time.

It wasnt cheap, but in reality works out about ?400 more than buying all the parts and having the existing one rebuilt. It will also look new, and have 1 years warrenty!

So looking forward to getting that!

Its the complete engine without inlet or turbo.

Rich

Its most likely a recon. But having chatted to vauxhall, its usually all new. Because they dont use oversized bearings, the crank, rods etc all get replaced if worn. The head is new as they dont skim heated ones. Pistons, cams, nuts, bolts, pumps, gaskets all new.

So when it all comes down to it, its a recon/new engine that is probably 95% new.

Just curious, but I assume this "new engine" will be putting out standard power? I'm just wondering why you didn't want to go down the route of building a decent spec, stronger engine. Yes, it may be more work to re-build an engine to your specification, but you already have Steven Gault to do the work for you. Yes you'll have a brand new engine, but it won't be as strong as one that you could have had built. I don't want to know how much this engine was. You have too much money, lol.

After speaking to absolutley loads of nova turbo owners, i've been told that anything over 300bhp is very hard to handle in a FWD car. Nevermind a nova! Even rick and his mega spec turbo nova often says he wished he'd stuck with Phase 2 LET.

I've settled myself to have a phase 2 setup. Which runs fine on a standard engine and is very reliable. Beastie has run his since 2002 until recently and never had any major problems.

I just want to fit the engine and never have to remove it so hopefully this will be perfect.

When you looking to get the shell back keith? Will the dipping remove the paint from inside sills, chassis legs, box sections etc? If so i take it the e-coat will recover it up? are you going to try and repaint inside these areas or just waxoyl/similar?
I take it the engine is a new build from vauxhall, not one from the vxpro range? (it will have the letter r in front of the part number, signifying that its an exchange unit as in the top phot of the xe)
I fitted an x20xev from the vxpro range to a vectra at work, first one had 5bar oil pressure at idle, (it leaked oil from almost everwhere!) second one had none! Third engine ok, but i learned after that some vxpro engines are reconned by agency staff! Another v6 we fitted threw a rod as the customer drove home!

Anyways, awsome build as always keith.

The e-coat reseals the entire shell. I'll probably throw some waxoil in as well for good measure.

I'm pretty sure you cant get a new build engine anymore. It'll be a recon. I've been told all the parts used are new tho, and i assume only the bare cast block will be original. I'm not sure how true this is tho?

Your not filling me with the greatest of confidence with your experiences. They give a years warrenty tho so hopefully if anything did happen then it will happen in the first year. I'm doing this in the confidence that it'll go in and never come back out tho! - Others have used these in the past and not had problems so hopefully i'll be the same.

Edit: a friend is getting a Z20LET from vaux on wednesday and will have it fitted asap. So if it gives any trouble then vaux will be refunding me asap.

Wish i had stuck with phase stuff as its just so much easier. Then i see and hear rob's autronic'd spider and you realise its all going to be worth it in the long run!

as you say Rick, an autronic let sounds so different to a motronic one! my friends is fairly quiet, where as myne is realy loud, constantly pops and bangs when you let off or come down the gears!:thumb:
sounds like its getting there slowly Keith!

Just a helpful warning keith, i work for vauxhall, so i kinda know how they operate. I presume the warranty only covers just what you have bought? ie if it goes tits up they'll just supply you a new block and head assy? how will the warranty stand if they know the engine has been modded and the unthinkable happens?
would love to see the pics when it's been e- coated, i'm thinking of having my sport shell done (although it's quite rough in places)
Cheers, john.

E- coating is worthwhile but I didn't bother with it on my shell.

I really had mine dipped to just clear all the old paint off and to reveal and nasties which as it happened there was non whatsoever ;)

If you have a shed load of fabrication to do then it makes sense to get it dipped as you cant ask for a cleaner base to start from

Chassis rails etc will still be fully painted and sealed by the painter when its painted so I'm not worried about the lack of paint in there for now.

Can't wait to see yours Keith, maybe next time you can tow me home at excessive speed !

No problem mate, would be my pleasure!!

Well folks, this has to be the most exciting time for me. Phil from Surface Processing kindly took some shots of my nova after it spent 24 hours in the acid bath.

To say i'm chuffed is an understatement. Its come out without any problems, no holes, no damage under the paint. FANTASTIC!! I'm like a kid at christmas.

This will be the first and probably the last time you'll see a Nova shell completely naked, bare shiney metal!

Here's the pics!!

Do it after its painted. You really dont want any trace of that stuff in or near the paint booth.

Cheers folks! Must say a huge thanks to Rich (novasport) for all the help and advice when getting this done. He's the real legend here for being the first one of us mad enough to do this, without him doing it this wouldnt be happening.

It's worth it, but i'd imagine you have to have a minty mint shell for it to be of any use !

I've seen a rotten vw Camper after a similar process

Look closely at the photos, there's a fair bit of work in the bay. The recess is there for the alternator, its stiched, 6 speed mount, strengthning plates, and theres some bits cut out to allow room for the intercooler.

Yeah, they are all done too, doors, wings, bonnet, bootlid :)
