ah, so it is part of the caliper house etc aswell, oh well, will just try getting them sand blasted and coated, if they survive!

Probably best, I think it was about £120 for the two backing plates, and over £45 for the new rubber slieve, pins to hold it in, and the metal cover (for the handbrake thing to slide on)

Here come's the broken record again.
No engine yet, No dash yet, and no topmounts yet. So I commisioned a spare set of topmounts for the meantime because the garage was in bad need of a cleanout.
So I fitted the front coilovers, tie bars, knuckles etc and rolled the car out of the garage
Coilovers, and lovely shiney paint!

Well, the bad luck continues.
Before anyone asks, yes, the engine still is not sorted.
I left the engine to get sorted in december, and got a new block sourced in januraryish. However with a heavy workload, the block only got sent to get bored over easter. The machist has some problems with his equipment etc etc, but when he finally got to my block, he's discovered that cylinder 4 needs bored to 87mm to be anygood to me.
Now my pistons are 86.5mm (.5mm over standard) and therefore if i keep this block, i'll need 4 new pistons. Or I need to source yet another block which will bore to 86.5mm safely :(
So i'm at my witt's end at the moment, i'm fed up of delays and fed up with the whole car. It looks like i'm not going to have it ready for any show's at all this year with all the cockups, so much for the 25th aniversery of the Nova. :(
I've a few good friends looking out for a good block now, hopefully i'll sort something soon.
Keith
Theres a LET block on eBay right now.
On the other hand, its only a car show, its not really life or death TBH.

Yeah but I've aimed to have the car ready for PV, Billing and Trax, And at the moment only trax is looking likely. It may just have to do tho.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but rather than paying people to do everything, which means you getting let down... Why don't you do it yourself? Which means it gets done how you want it, correctly, and on time to your schedule?

Your not the only one, mines has stood in parts since September with no engine. Still yet to go to a bodyshop too. It must just be me that doesnt give a funk about this 25th anniversary melarky lol

Stripped the new block last night, its in alot better condition than the last one I sourced, very little wear on the cylinders, so it should bore nicely and be problem free!

Well folks, whilst laying in the sun today, I got a sudden burst of Nova Energy (lmao) and got to work in the garage.
I...
- Fitted the C20LET loom to the car, and made up some gromits for the bulkhead.
- Fitted the heater matrix pipes that go behind the dash, awaiting the dash arrival.
- Fitted my rear carbon fibre door cards, and spaced them out slightly so I can still use my seatbelts
- Got the central locking wired in, and then fitted the passanger door carbon fibre door card. Awaiting the flocked pockets and handles with dash. (didnt fit the drivers door door card until I sort the alarm solinoid.
- Fitted my coil and bailey header tank
- Tested that the lights etc all still work.
Sorry there's no photos, but it was dark by the time I was finished, I'll drag it out into the sunlight next weekend for photos.

Well folks, still no major update, however my second flocked dash (first lost in post) is complete and was posted yesterday, so hopefully this will actually arrived before the weekend.
Also I won some Fearless motorsport Front and Rear strut braces on an ebay auction, and they are also in the post.
The material hasnt arrived for the retrim yet, trust me to pick a rare stocked colour/type.
Finally, no update on my engine, but the new block was sent to get bored last tuesday, so fingers crossed another few weeks and i'll get the engine back.

Well folks, over 4 months, two dash's sent and loads of phone call's later, my dash finally arrived. I was told it was posted last monday, but all the postage labels said it wasnt posted until thursday.
First dash got lost in post and I got a full refund, so the dash I've received technically just cost me the price of a dash and postage.
Now for the pictures -

It's bent and flaking off. It was very well wrapped in bubble wrap, however only a bit of cardboard round the front to protect the flock, but this ment the dash was free to collapse in on itself. Damage was caused by parcel force, but wouldnt have happened if it was in a box, which is how I sent it to him.
I'm very very angry, This probably means I actually wont even make billing now.
I'm going to try and quickly send another dash to another company as soon as I can, I've heard good reports about some other companies, so going to try those.

Makes me sick the amount of crap youve had to put up with on parts for this car keith.
GUTTED for you Keith, I know plenty of people that rate Doug but I won't using him to even flock my dash top.
Any news on the engine ?
BTW sorry I didn't catch up with you at PV, battery went flat so couldn't call anyone to see if they were there
Who does the flocking Keith? I've still got a few to do.
I dunno if I mentioned it but theres a Lad comes to Letterkenny once in a while that does Dash Flocking, I've seen some of his work and its a1, cant fault it.

On the phone Doug's a sound fella, and seems like a no-messing type of guy, but he just does'nt deliver on his promises. I've a txt on my phone saying everything was posted last monday, the postage stamp says thursday - which was the day after you re-posted on Passionford.
I could easily put some threads up everywhere warning people, but thats not going to help me, and i'll end up being the bad guy.
I tried calling you from PV, if we'd found you we had a solar powered phone charger you could have used lol, - see you at billing!
Dod - see you at 3.30 for this dash :)

Well guys, some positive news.
I had another good look round the dash, and felt that the damage could be fixed. I set about straightening the bar's and the dash pretty much popped back into shape! RESULT! - The quality of the flocking is actually very good, its just a nightmare to pickup on camera, especially with a flash.
I then trialed the dash into the car, and the damage to the edge was 80% hidden under the windscreen, you'd only notice it if you actually tryed to find it.
So with that all in mind, I build the dash back up, bit by bit, and it all went together perfectly. I'm 99% happy with it, obviously in these pictures I havent bolted in the under trays and nothings fully secured yet, but I feel it looks very good indeed. The flocked door pockets look great against the carbon door cards etc. I also have to paint the lower section of the glove box black to match in.
I just have to finish the drivers door wireing now and then fit the door card, and await the seats etc.

Won't make billing mate, Don't have the time to get it MOT'd and its £550 on the boat with a trailer
The Vin plate is original, but i've a special one in the pipeline!
Thanks for the encouragement folks. Not sure when i'll get it fired up as i'm without my Inlet, but as soon as its back i'll get it fired up, and i'll finish everything else possible before it arrives.

Not as much progress today as I came into some trouble with my front hubs. However I'll get this sorted tomorrow.
Exhaust now complete:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4290.jpg
Going to make a bracket from the exhaust to the rear mount.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4291.jpg
Equal length shaft now fitted and bolted to the block. And outer shafts fitted.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4292.jpg
Tomorrow i'm going to hopefully get the hubs fixed, fit those, fill gearbox with oil etc.
I'm awaiting on a new engine mount, and the oil return pipe from vauxhall.
I also fitted up some of my coolent hoses:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4288.jpg
And finally I fitted the final fuel pipe from the tank to the pump. And i've put a gallon of fuel into the tank to test for leaks.
Thanks for looking.
Keith

Nope, noticed that myself, I may add one at a later date.
Keith
I would.
A let will be moving about on the mounts(if youve seen one of a RR, they jump and dive everywhere lol ), so worthwhile doing.
Unless its on solid mounts.
krobinson
25-06-08, 10:26 PM
The rear mount is solid. Fronts are std. The same exhaust has run on Dave's old red nova turbo for about a year now with no problems. It was made by JP exhausts (same place makes ricks)
Hopefully it'll be ok, but if not i'll sort it :)
There should be a flexi joint where the downpipe bolts to the 90* elbow on the turbo.
I wouldn't bother fixing the exhaust to the rear mount either, if the flexi mount is on the elbow then the whole system is gonna shift around slighty, fixing it to the rear mount will only cause (possible) probs if you ask me.
Shouldn't jump around the engine bay either, decent solid mount on the rear and some good standard (filled with stikaflex) ones up front are more than enough to hold it solid, mine doesn't budge at all !

I'm not sure why JP didnt fit a flexi, they made the exhaust on Dave's old car, and made a copy for me, both didnt have a flexi. I didnt notice until I got it home but since its run fine on Dave's, i'll not worry about it.

I'm trying to keep a decent standard, but tbh I just want it running to ease my mind. So some things arn't 100%. Looking at Dec's thread makes me want to work harder on some bits, but then would I want to drive it? It's a catch 22 situation.

Dec's thread, the most amazing thing ive ever seen, shouldnt be compared with tbh - that one is a bit too 'dont touch it' and it would do the same to me.
Im confident that you will and should do the same as you did with NDZ - that never ended up looked sorry/ tired for itself..

Fitted my new skirts tonight:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4298.jpg
I didnt fancy drilling the sills, so the clips are fitted with very strong bonding, My other nova has been like this for nearly 2 years and is still perfect :thumb:
I somehow lost my turbo manifold nuts, so ordered some yesterday from Autovaux, and they arrived this morning at 9.30am, RESULT!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4297.jpg
Also sourced the correct Altenator from Dod (thanks mate), gave it a quick clean and got it fitted, its still not 100% pretty, but its impossible to see when the inlet / tophat cover is on so i'm not going to worry too much.
And finally I fitted the correct cambelt cover, rocker cover, and then threw the fanbelt on.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4296.jpg
Still to do before the start:
- Collect and fit new passanger engine mount
- Fit intercooler and radiator
- Collect and fit inlet manifold and all sensors etc that join to it.
Then i'm good to prime the engine and work on getting it started. I'm going to set a target of next weekend, but hopefully i'll have it sorted before then (Inlet dependent)
Thanks

Well folks,
I've been a bit depressed with the car not fireing up, but with me working on it for the last 2 weeks flat out, I never had the cover on it. So the car got mega dusty.
So today with my hubs sorted, I put it back on its feet and took it out of the garage and hosed it down/dryed it off. Before though I took some pictures (you cant notice the dust in the photos) - Photos will help cheer me up until I get it running.
Ignore the water pipe coming off the turbo, I'm going to change its route during the week.

I'm going to try a few more things during the week to try and get it running:
- Replace Crank Sensor
- Try a different fuel pump relay
- Try my ECU out in a friends cavalier turbo (if it works then thats it ruled out)
If all that fails, i'll get another loom and try that. If the new loom works then i'll fit it, and lengthen the wires to tidy it up - I really hope it's not my loom though.

Well guys, sorted the problem, it turn's out that it was the crank sensor after all. Andy Bishop kindly posted me a new one today.
It's only running on two cylinders, but after some investigation and swapping the order of injectors etc, it turns out two injectors arn't fireing any fuel in. So i'm going to upgrade to Saab red's or new VXR injectors ready for when I eventually go to phase 2.
Again, huge thanks to Andy Bishop and Jonlem who i've been tortureing on the phone these past few weeks, they've been a great help.
Off to billing tomorrow morning (big trip ahead) update and video when i'm home with new injectors.

Good to hear its running now, i was 99% sure it would be the crank sensor, not much else can stop both a spark and fuel.
Hmm, strange about the injectors, are they not brand new from vaux? Or was it just a bare engine you bought?
So do the two non firing injectors fire when you swap there positions?
VXR injectors are pretty big for ph2, means you usually need run a low fuel pressure.

Engine thats come's is just the short motor, my injectors are standard and havent fired for 3 years, so are probably no good. If i swap them on the loom they still dont fire, so it's definatly the injectors.
I'll go with VXR or Saab red's. Anyone got a set they could take to billing?

Fairly soon mate, I'm just waiting on my interior retrim. Bleed the brakes, sort the handbrake (its not holding) and just small silly things like pipeing to the washer jets, adjusting things/spanner check.
I'll probably source a mint set of yellow's and then upgrade to saab red's when I fit phase 2 and a 4 bar reg.

Keith
I'd just stick with the Yellows (just get a set clean / tested), then its just a 3.5bar reg.
Sure SAAB reds run lower than 4bar, thats the whole point in fitting them, so it runs at less pressure, less strain on the pump.
Take it you've got a brand new fuel pump ? Phase 2 was designed to be run on std Yellows with a 3.5bar reg, mine ran absolutly fine with that set up ... well, untill it melted !! lol
krobinson
10-07-08, 09:38 PM
Regal sell a 4 bar reg with Phase 2 though. Maybe i'm wrong, or maybe thats why you ran lean and melted?
Edit - It's a 3.5 bar reg, my bad :(
Keith
Nah, definatly runs a 3.5 bar reg on P2, i got the P2 set up off a mate (who got it from Regal) his ran fine for a couple of year, mine ran spot on for 18 month, fueling was always bang on when it was on the rollers.
My prob was just down to a high milage / worn bottom end, checked pump and injectors and there both fine.

^ apsolute genius m8, ive never understood what all these sensors do, but im starting to understand now, i guess the crank sensor is mainly there for safety, in contact with his cyborg buddy the ecu that has his hand on the trigger to cut the spark and fuel if **** hits the fan
I know quite a few people using the light blues on phase 2, injectors from the coilpack xe, supposedly an intermediate of the yellows and saab reds.
XE creams 0 280 150 744 214cc/min@2.5 bar
XE blues 0 280 150 427 241cc/min@3.0 bar
LET yellows 0 280 150 420 304cc/min@3.0 bar
Bosch reds 0 280 150 431 359cc/min@3.0 bar
LEt yellows with a higher fuel pressure are what most people use for ph2 :thumb:
i have a nice cleaned set of bosch yellows here, and a set of xe blues if your interested...

Do NOT use the EDS modified regulator though, fit a 2wd cossy one and get it setup on a wideband

Well folks, I got my injectors back today and fitted them straight after work. I must say, the service from www.injectorcleaning.co.uk (http://www.injectorcleaning.co.uk) is fan-fecking-tastic, I posted them 2pm on tuesday and they cleaned them wednesday, and I got them back today, If everyone worked that quickly i'd be one happy fella!!
Well its now running almost perfect. I say almost perfect because there is a fault code on the ECU, Jonboy kindaly checked the code and its 21 = Throttle positioning sensor, so it's idleing at 2k. However it actually idles perfect at 2k, and when I rev it, it drops back perfect to 2k.
So i'm going to have a play with the TPS and maybe replace it if needed.
Oh, and here's the compulsory vid - (please be aware its idleing high as said)

Could be, but the fault code showing is 21, which on topbuzz translates to the TPS sensor. It actually idles perfectly and smooth, just in the wrong position.
Excellent stuff keith! My xe ran like that when i first fired it in, turned out to be the throttle cable! (poorly adjusted.)

My throttle cable is too long :( I ordered a calibra one and its 1" too long, but i'm just going to clamp it down at the pedal once everythings sorted :)
Keith
i havent really posted on this thread keith but this just has to be said. Your car is absoulutely mint, the attention to detail is out of this world, by far one of the best examples to date. your determination and high spirits are inspiring.
I cant wait to see this car in the flesh.

Awsome mate glad to see its finally running - Once its setup it will be even better :D
Is the fault code bringing the ecu light on?
If not it could just be an old code.
Good to see at least something going right for once for you :)

Yeah the ECU light is on solid. If I earth it as per Jonboy's instructions (earth the brown/yellow wire) then it flash's twice, then once, which = 21 code.
I'll get a new one in next week, meanwhile I'll sort all the other little niggles.

Yeah, interior should be finished quite soon, few weeks? HOPEFULLY!! :)
niceone keith. i may have missed it but what was stopping it running?
crank sensor. and duff injectors
Is the tps not adjustable on it?

Is the tps not adjustable on it?
Don't know tbh mate, but the ECU is throwing a TPS fault code out, so i'm sure it's knackered.
From memory the tps is adjustable, might be the cause of the high idle? Mark the screws, then slacken them slightly, try adjusting the tps to see if it drops the idle speed. Ie the throttle may be closed but tps is giving the the ecu a signal that is otherwise.
I know some are and some arent on the xe, but not looked on a let. If you can it should be adjusted just before it clicks when the throttle is closed.

I think on the LET like the later dizzyless XE on Motronic 2.8 the TPS are variable not just on/off like the earlier XE's .
Not really an issue for this problem - just get a replacement one and you then know that its not the TPS if the fault remains.
Hope all is going well with the rebuild :thumb:

I got a new TPS sensor today but its not solved the problem. I removed the tophat to check if the throttle body was jammed open or something, but it's all fine. I think its most likely the Idle Control Valve now, so i'm going to try cleaning that in the next few days.
Today I worked on bleeding the brakes, got them done fairly quickly and the pedal is now nice and hard :)

I cleaned half the rubbish out of the interior, need to give it a hoover soon. I'm just waiting on a few more dash bits before I bolt it down tight. I'm also stuck on where to mount the ECU!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4460.jpg
I also moved my water pipe, I just need a T piece now to join everything behind the tophat, I wont be able to test the ICV until I do this.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4455.jpg
And the car up on axel stands now until I get everything finished.

Looks really good mate - Fearless Strut Brace looks good, front one will look awsome as well :)
Stunning as ever.
For a neat way of mounting the ecu take a look at Simps old nova turbo thread.
He bolted his to the underside of the battery tray so you cant see it at all from inside the car.
But it would mean drilling holes in your shell

or fabricate something out of alloy and bond it to the underside of the battery tray and fasten the ECU to that.

i did this, but used strong, pricey velcro.. lol..
No probs with it since - easy to remove.

a good way to find out if it is the icv thats causing high idle is to start the motor then nip the pipe with your fingers that comes from the icv to the tophat, if it drops to idle or even lower then you know its the icv at fault

Well I got my new Idle control valve today and also my new fanbelt. Fitted both after work and the car is now running 100% with no ECU faults at all.
Very very pleased, just a few things to sort out next and then i'll book the MOT.
Hopefully the interior retrim wont be much longer either.

Well, today I drove the car out of the garage, its first proper drive:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4479.jpg
Fitted my Fearless Motorsport strut brace:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4489.jpg
Fitted the chrome, new plates and put 4 nuts in all the wheels.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4497.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4490.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4492.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_4494.jpg
I then took the car about 50 yards and back, just about got it into second gear and then back to base. It feels great, very tight and the suspension isnt too bad.
I need to book an MOT soon, but the ECU is throwing up fault 21 again (TPS sensor, high voltage) so need to sort that first, along with a few more small things.
