Using a standard beam / mount points running this low shortens the wheel base around 20MM from the rear ALONE.

You don't need airbags - leave that to american show sh1te.

NDZ was damn clean, that got 'used' properly..
I think keith will give the car its dues in driving, just that for now - he might as well build the car to the highest of calibers..

Awesome Keith... really really fine attention to detail man

But somehow, please correct me, I can't see you thrashing this around the ring?

To be honest, no I probably wont thrash it like I did my old one. But i'll definatly drive it there and do some laps of the track!

For the record folks, i was looking for the best arch clearance and the car will not be that low and will not be on air bags.

Got my hubs back today.

I've used VW golf Syncro bearings, which have the same internal diameter to be able to fit a cavalier driving flange. They are 4mm bigger diameter on the outside, so the nova knuckle needed machined out 4mm bigger.

With the larger bearings and full strength driving flange, these should handle the power now probs.

Why is the sky blue? ;)

burgo

Why is the sky blue? ;)

The blue color of the sky is due to Rayleigh scattering. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is affected by the air.
However, much of the shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed blue light is then radiated in different directions. It gets scattered all around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.

but whats that gotta do with your hubs?

just incase you dont know, real loom tape is not sticky and has a shineier finish.

"black electrical tape" is crap for car loom's slightist hin't of oil or petrol and falls off leaving it's slime all over the wires.

i use expandable braided sleeve with heatshrink at joints and ends for all the loom's i make (im a apprentice wireman for delphi)

Keith, i beg you not not let a perfect build down with black tape all over the loom! (sorry i have a haterid for this stuff!)

give me a pm if you won't to know more (i have some pics of my work), i mite be persuaded to send you some freebies to help out.

I used to work there as you know, they have some good stuff.
Order some TNA19 or TNA25, its what I have rewrapped my loom in.
You need to finish it with a bit of adhesive tape to stop it peeling back but you can hide it where its not noticed.

Well folks, its been slow progress lately, i'm traveling over 150-200 mile round trip, to work everyday since starting on 3rd december, and christmas etc isnt helping either.

Just a tiny update on the loom, its 99% finished.
New "plug and play" plug, i'll wire the other half into the Nova loom so the engine loom can be just simply unpluged.

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee37/nova-andy/loom/IMG_0679.jpg

Lots of wires lengthened, especially the green plug which is the diagnostic plug. I'll mount this somewhere on the dash to find faults if needed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/tophat.jpg

For those who've never seen one, Its an EDS Tophat. Its basically a replica of the standard tophat casting, however its 50mm internal bore instead of the standard 40mm. It can be modifyed by cutting the front section by about 2" to make it 60mm. It also has an outlet to the rear for a dump valve, and the standard tophat "turbo" cover fits over, so its all hidden and standard looking.

Keith,

I have the same one as you, cut back to the 60mm point.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/Tophat1a.jpg

However due to the size of the lip :-

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/Tophat2a.jpg

I would suggest you use a die grinder and smooth it off a bit :-

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/Tophat3a.jpg

I also used a 60-50mm adapter pipe from Roose

Keep up the good work

Joff

Ste L

I'm going to check the boost pipes that Radtec made for me and see if they will stretch to 60mm, if they wont i'll keep it at 50mm until I change the pipe.

Oh, and cheer's joff! I want to use a Die Grinder on the inlet side too. Where's the best place to buy a Die Grinder?

Keith

Keith,

I found the easiest way to get a die grinder up and running was :-

One of these ....
http://www.maxeng.co.uk/ebay/Sealeypics/SA2250-2.V2.jpg

Coupled with one of these.....
http://i22.ebayimg.com/05/i/000/a1/f6/b0df_1.JPG

Using one of these.....
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/Williamstools/DSC01984.jpg

Most of the stuff I got from machine mart or off ebay. I really only bought my compressor for the die grinder, but it has come in really useful for the air tool kit I got with it. The airgun is really handy for wheel nuts and getting suspension struts apart. The tyre gauge speaks for itself and the air gun was just genrally handy at cleaning of stuff.

Would recommend if you have the space. I didn't fancy the noise in the garage so put mine in a sound proofed box on the outside of the garage with the pipe and cable running through the wall. You can hardly hear it when on - just need to lift the lid when using for long periods so it doesn't overheat.

Yeah - I did the inlet as well - just take it off the turbo before you do it otherwise you'll get thousands of bits going into the turbo itself!

Just started ......

You can also buy a range of flap wheels to fit the die grinder to smooth off after die grinding out the excess. They are very useful to help maintain a smooth cylindrical shape without undulations.

Inside the oil or coolant system yes, but in the inlet surely it would just get burnt to http://www.gaycork.com/forum/images/avatars/simpsons_smithers.gif ?

Not if it went back out the combustion chamber & into the turbo.

I'd bet it wont come off tbh but no way I'd take the risk I dont think.

I've had 2 plenums for a GSi powder coated, One I had to clean out because shot got inside it (definate NO NO) & another the bung came out from the inlet runner during coating.

if parts of it where to flake off, it could score the bores and so on.

ive heard of engines being written off due to a few grains of sand, only takes a small amount!

Mine wasn't coated on the inside either, and looked spotless but it had been sandblasted and that must have released into the oil when it got warm.

Same thing happened to Rick Draper as well I think!!

Your rocker cover Lee? Yeah i've heard terrible simaliar storys with cam covers. Thankfully mine was acid dipped along with the shell then just painted on the outside.

The inlet will be sealed off, blasted then cleaned out before use.

Not to insult anyones intelligence but I feel you'd (not you Keith) have to be pretty clueless to fit any engine parts with traces of shot or powder coat looming inside.

No one had to tell me the consequences, yet I spent hours flushing out an inlet I blasted years ago.

Lee H
14-01-08, 12:09 PM
Mine looked spotless but apparantly the shot blasting embeds itself into the cover and depsite however much you clean it traces will be released wehen the cover gets red hot on the engine.

I would never put anything on my engine that didn't look spotless.

How's it going Keith, no updates for a while??

Joff

I havent touched the car since very late November/early december.

The problem with the engine annoyed me, and its still waiting to be fixed as my engine builder is very busy.

However i've taken this time to save hard and order all the parts needed to finish the car.

Bits that have arrived:

-New Altenator
-Full set of Chris Astley Motorsport (roose) hoses (all 4 kits!!)
-Got a custom braided oil feed made for the turbo.
-FSE (Walbro) fuel pump

And bits on order:

-Carbon door cards from rick, being relaquered by Nick.
-Flocked dash by Suffock Flocking Services
-Speedline Allesio 2's with 195 40 16 Toyo's
-Suspension kit.

So once all that arrives, and I get the engine back, it will only be small things needed to finish the car, things like completeing brakes, fuel lines, and the final large thing will be an interior retrim.

Photobucket is down at the moment, so no pics yet L(

Since it was about 12 degree's today instead of the usual -2, I decided to make a mini spray booth in the small shed and prime up my brake Servo and the Knuckles.

I need to buy some nice satin black to finish them, and some wet n dry sandpaper.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3641.jpg

Also made a start on cleaning up all the brake calipers, they were brand new for my old nova in 2003, so are still in fairly good shape. Just need to totally degrease them now before I paint them.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3642.jpg

Also fitted and wired my fuel pump. Just need to get some fuel lines now to complete the underneath plumbing.

Well folks, again not much is happening with the car.

The gear selector is now painted satin black and refitted (no pics :() However I just can't seem to get a good finish on the brake servo, so I may just buy a new one.

I ordered a new bearing for the equal length driveshaft and got to work fitting that. This basically holds the shaft to the block of the engine, so that the two outer shafts are then simaliar length. (will make more sence when I've the engine back in)

Old bearing and bracket removed:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3703.jpg

New Bearing:

Fitting to the shaft (needed pressed on)

Gave the bracket a de-grease:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3707.jpg

And bolted it back on:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3708.jpg

Finished product:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3712.jpg

I'm ordering up my Gaz Coilovers this week hopefully, this will then see the rear end finished with brakes, suspension and the speedlines fitted.

Also the flocked dash should be back with 10 days (guy doing it is on holidays)

Well, again no major update.

The dash was posted on monday, but still has not arrived, most likely due to all the bank holidays in a row.

The coilovers are delayed and will hopefully show up at the end of next week.

The carbon door cards are now with Nick to get laquered and then shipped over.

The engine has now been stripped and work will begin soon on swapping the blocks over, then I can get it fitted and running.

I've purchased a battery, some brake line and fuel lines, Cormac has offered some help on tuesday/wednesday to get the underneath 99% finished, ready for the engine coming back.

Today I removed the steel rimms I used to transport the car home on, and set two new speedlines on the rear, just to see how the silver contrasts with my choice of colour, and to generally boost my spirits about the car after all thats gone wrong.

Well, Some good progress made today by Me and Cormac (thanks again bud!!)

First off, I removed the cover and tryed to get rid of all the dust (dunno how it got dusty under the cover)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3901.jpg

First thing was to finish wireing the fuel pump, and plumb it with some new fuel lines.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3906.jpg

Fuel lines on the floor:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3909.jpg

And finally up to the bay, Feed has the masking tape on it, and the other is the return. I held the fuel rail and pipes up and they are within perfect reach.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3903.jpg

Then I removed the heater matrix, and cut the pipe back short, then fitted the Silicone hose with the jublie clip behind the bulkhead so it wont come off.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3902.jpg

Meanwhile Cormac was busy making up the new copper brake lines from the flexi's to the rear calipers:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3914.jpg

And he renewed the front brake pipes too as the original coating was coming off. I'm going to leave the rear's original tho as they are still 100% perfect.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3929.jpg

Finally got a nice finish on my Servo!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3926.jpg

I didnt think it was possible before today. But now I know that once the dash go's in, all the electrics are fine. Its just a matter of sorting a retrim, and getting the engine back with enough time to MOT/Tax and Insure it.

Yeah, you know me Ben, it'll be driven as much as possible.

Theres currently a 2 week waiting list for MOT's here (its done in goverment test centers unlike the rest of the uk) So I should be able to get a date soon enough.

Following on from some sound advice from my friend Gary, I've removed the heater matrix again, and ground the hole bigger, inserted a thick rubber gromit, and this should prevent the bulkhead chewing the pipe to shreds during any vibration that may occure. Well spotted Gary!! Thanks :D

Ahh, nice one Nick, i have had my carbon panels i bought of Oli (DHdev) from few years back sat here gathering dust, they are going in the new track car, but i though how could i get them looking nice and new again, so if i just rub them down what type of sealer is used, then just normal spray lacquer?

(sorry to but into the tread Keith)

Nick J
30-03-08, 11:57 AM
Thanks chaps, I hope keith is as chuffed with them....
Scott + Yoza -I use a water based basecoat sealer before lacqeuring as the solvent resin in the carbon weave could possibly react with the solvent in the lacqeur, I have attempted just lacqeuring them in the past however It doesnt work as well and you end up going through the same process 3 or 4 times for the same finish! Which is a real pain as you can only air dry them it ends up taking forever! Any more qu's though please pm as I dont want to clutter up this lads thread etc, thanks, Nick.

Update on Dash:

Flocked dash is lost in the post, Suffolk Flocking have fully refunded me which was very decent, and he's going to source another dash, flock it and post back FOC. I'm hopeing this happens very soon however as i'm in desperate need of it.

My new Distributor and Coil arrived today - Thanks to Autovaux!

I also got a Second hand dizzy from Jonlem to use the bracket and module from. Will get that all cleaned up and put together ASAP.

Engine is Mid Build at the moment, my builder was flat out and has only just got the time to sort it after the block problem about 15 pages back. Cant wait to get it back, fitted and finally running!

Gaz front Coilovers, 300lb front springs, and rear shocks Arrived today!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3970.jpg

So I fitted the rear shocks (top bolt tight, bottom bolt loose until I refurb the springs)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3964.jpg

Cleaned the rear springs, However I think they will need sandblasted and re-painted!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3967.jpg

And gave the rear calipers a coat of Silver, Will fit them when I've got some new pads.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3968.jpg

I havent fitted the front coilovers as i'm waiting on some new concentric alloy top mounts that I ordered today.

Until next time!

why not run them as they are?

krobinson
02-04-08, 08:50 PM
why not run them as they are?

Thats a difficult one to answer.

On one hand - After a refurb, the paint will only come off anyway, and they'll rust again.

On the other hand - Everything else in there is now clean and painted, so they'd look out of place rusty.

Nightmare, Sometimes I wish I never started lol

Keith

Good idea Mark!

Well my last car was never in immaculate condition, but i found that though the more you try to make it "perfect" the more things you find your not happy with and take/spend more doing it etc, hence why with the new one it's track car as IBA to get into the silliness of making it too nice as i wont keep it in good nick for long lol

It's looking really good now though Keith,so keep on ploding on.

Update 04/04/2008

Brake calipers now dry, and fitted along with new pads and a new fitting kit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3982.jpg

I also used some nifty bits from Maplin to secure the fuel lines without drilling the shell.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3981.jpg

One side of the handbrake cable is fitted, and brand new mechanism purchased, however I need to modify the cavalier short cable to allow it to fit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3979.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/keithrobinson/Nova%20Rebuild%202006-2007/100_3977.jpg

I tightened up the rear bearings on the discs and tested the new shocks for clearance.

I mentioned that on mig. I have about 8mm ish clearance on my rears, and they rub if I corner very hard.
If the cars never going to be on a track etc, then they'll probably be fine.

Keith,

you have been traveling a million miles every week since early December and yet you still manage to find time to work on your project. How do you do it? :thumb:

During weekdays I cycle to work (yes really - Holland has the most expensive petrol in the world - b4st4rds) which is 14 miles. Then 14 miles to get back home, after which I feel like doing nowt. Could probably do with some proton pills to get my lower backside in gear after tea! :p

Anyway enough pathetic ranting for now. Keith, well impressed with your project. Gives me lots of motivation to restore the Red Shed (about time too - it's been sitting in my drive for over 2 years now). Regarding the broken oil feed on your block: I know how it feels mate. Well gutted. Ugh.

Cheers from that there Holland,

Same old story really mate, I don't want to sound like a broken record.

1. Still not got the engine back, block has been away getting bored for 3 weeks
2. Dash was lost in post, suffolk havent been able to source another, so i need to post another, hopefully Craig or Mark will be able to help with that.
3. Waiting over 2 weeks now for some top mounts.

I dropped the seats off to get retrimmed on friday, they will be finished early June, so no PV in the Nova for me, however i'll be there in my girl's corsa C.

On a plus note, I got my handbrake cable finished and the rear springs painted and fitted.
