Just get some solar panels on the roof:thumb:

Having mentioned it though i did see a golf the other day parked up with a small solar panel on the dash, about 4 inches wide and a foot long didnt look to see what it was hooked upto though, perhaps a laptop or something? Just thought i would mention it as i havnt seen it before

what amp are the standard nova petrol alternators?

im hoping that'll then cure my problem of the battery going flat.

dont really fancy a solar panel on the roof lol
but iv never seen heard of a solar panel being used before either.

yer got the new battery in etc. just need to sort the alt out now

whats yours like the ste? thought youd NEED a big one on a valver? or are you weight saving ;)

Think nova ones are 55A.

Nova GSi alt is same as that on an XE. Will charge a 70amp battery fine too.

Perhaps your fan is funked & drawing more current than it should (likely)

alright cheers buddy!

so will going up to a 70amp one do for me. is that a big hike up in alternator terms etc?

cheers, lew

ahhhh that sounds like somthing i could have done wrong, i remember when connecting it all that i wasnt sure what wnt where etc.

how can i check it. it does come on quick maybe as soon as the engine starts running. but the bay does get hot.

to be honest 70amp is poor compared to more modern cars, me dads 1.2 base model punto has a 100amp alternator, with TWO 80amp fuses between the battery and the interior wiring. Yeah my fan is a bit noisy, but it cuts in at the right time and still does the job.

yer my fan is on almost straight away i think never really notised. that could be due to the engine etc that iv put in, as it never used to be like it.

iv got a big diesel battery. was the only thing that would turn the engine over i think

Sounds like you've got a problem if the fan is kicking in straight away.
It sound come on with about 3yellow bars above blue on the digidash.

am just charging the battery now so will check to dee when the fan kicks in etc. i might have to get an auto electrician to take a look at it all and find out why the batterys draining.

do you just match the amp on the battery to the amp on an alternator?

how do i find out what amp my battery is?

somewhere on the top it'll say 55AH or similar, or it might just say the battery size, for a nova it should be an 063 or 065, 065 being astra diesel size. they don't have to be matched, in fact most of the time the alternator will have a higher output than the battery.

well i carnt see any sort of numbers like 55ah.

F**k me thats a beefy battery, i think the cold cranking amps of mine is about 400,Lol.

SRlew

lol it turns it over like what the old battery did with the satndard engine in. so aint to much lol

mikey14sr

thats a huge battery for a nova! if it's struggling to turn the engine over there must be some thing wrong with the starter

SRlew
30-07-06, 05:53 PM
nah changed the starter

with the old battery it just would do anything lol

Adam

You've definently got a starter live/earth feed problem if that batt only just turns the engine over.

With my old knackered 400 battery, it turns over easily even leaving the car for a few days.

well the garage was like ah you need a bigger battery because of the engine. the bloke had 2 batterys in his mk1 escy to turn his over cause it was a high compression or somthing.

and an auto electrician has been around the engine

Sounds like the garage was trying con money out of you tbh.

SRlew

nah i didnt get the battery from them. it stalled at the garage and i tried turning it pver and it was having none of it. even when i got it home i charged it and it just gave it a waaaap and that was it lol

whats the biggest alternator you could fit on with 40's?
