View Full Version : bearing question
Are front and rear hub/wheel bearings the same? any help appreciated:confused:
Nope i dont think
Front's are pressed in.
Rears are just roller bearings.

no, the fronts are big sealed jobbies that need pressing in whereas the rears are just roller bearings in two different size cages that can be changed in about 10 minutes with a hammer and chisel

remove the steering knuckle and pop round to your local garage with the new bearing, shouldn't take them more than half an hour to do it for you
front one is a take it to your local garage and get them to use their press....
hammer them in yourself by all means but the bearing wont last long ;)
will if you heat the nuckle freeze the bearing and tap it genlty with an old outer race part of the bearing done loads like this cos usally i need to do them on a night lol
and for hammering the hub into the inner race? lol
Cheers for that lads, a press looks like the easiest option, especially in this hot weather:)
and for hammering the hub into the inner race? lol
it can all be done with hammers puches chistles heat/frezeing you just have to be patient and not hand fisted
you might not belive that it can be done but it can had an sri that i put the bearings in like this and they where still fine after 18 months when i sold it but a press is much easyier

I used to do front bearings in a big vice with sockets used as spacers, worked fine but a hydraulic press is a lot easier and quicker.

Ditto with the vice and I couldn't believe it when I found an old weighty hocky puck shaped bit of metal exactly the right size to punch the old one out easily.
