Yesterday while i was driving my car i heard a rather loud grinding noise, then a loud click coming from the engine bay,got it to my mates house and it sounded fine. When leaving to go home i started my car and it sounded like it was misfiring, while driving home when ever i was putting my foot on the accelerator it was clicking and clunking in the engine bay real loud and was nearly dying as it was idleing so low!and i dont think i could get over 40mph!
What could this be,please post up your answers as im really stuck!

Do a compression test to check the gasket first, then I'd just pull the head off and check everything.
Did you check the followers? I had exactly the same symptoms last month and it was simply the exhaust valve cam follower on number 3 cyclinder not on top of the valve.
Failing that it could be a f*cked dizzy. They tend to click a lot when they go as the weights flail around in side it.
Both of the above problems will cause low idleing and low power output and are well worth checking before you start taking the head off and being forced into a complete oil, gasket and headbolt change.

my headgasket went between 3+4. that sounded like there was something rattling in the engine so i stripped it down and it was the gasket.
take the rocker cover off 1st and see if theres any problems there, if not do a compression test or just whip the head off
