Indeed it is, with a power cap.
I wonder if that makes my engine a purple top?:D

basically a red top is average power and the blue top has an extra 30bhp from factory as race homologated engines. Similar to the milk branding from the milkman as GM were big supporters of milk for all back in the 90's

Redtop is just a term born out of the jealousy & envy of the FORD redtop. (early cosworth YB )

Surely XE is a much better fitting name?

redtop sounds a bit chavvy i reckon

Redtops and XE are only names coined to the c20xe, and tbh, neither are chavvy as unless you know vauxhalls and/or modifying well they arent commonly used words out of those circles.

Saxos have black and silvertop nicknames for their late and early engines (IRRC)

The problem with reffering to it as an 'XE' is that the c20xe isnt the only xe, the c14xe, c16xe, etc etc. XE only describes the compression ratio and the fact its MPi

^ True. The Beams Celicas come with either a Redtop or more powerful Blacktop engine as well, so its not just a Vaux thing.
