View Full Version : Best gearbox for my setup?

Basically want a more acceleration biased gearbox but which is best?

Not sure whats in at the moment (apart from its a 5 speed), its a 1.4SR block, but its a van so not sure if the gearbox got changed with the engine.

It does about 65 in 2nd and 100 in 3rd if this helps??? Mind you, it does rev a bit higher now due to B+ head, cam, and carb setup.

I know F10 and F13's fit but will F15/16's? Also are the final drives easy to change on these if I need to?

Thanks for any help!

1.4SR will probably have a F10, the code is stamped on the box under the linkage universal joint.
100mph in 3rd tho, sounds like quite a long ratio box.

For acceleration you want a f13CR, with a 4.18 final drive.

F15 will fit, but its harder to change final drive etc in them iirc.
F16 wont fit.

Cheers, will take a look to see what it is!

my sr is the same 100 in third off the clock in forth!

Long live where do you get the f13s from?

They are off the GSi and GTE not sure what else, I think the final drive differs throughout though!

gsi, gte, sri,sr's well some sr's anyway as far as im aware. The gtes had them as the most common. I got one today for free f13 cr 3.74 although my oul boy has nabbed it allready.

make sure your getting a close ratio and not a wide ratio which are just the same as f10's

Ye, get F13 off GSI/Gte, and some late SRi's.

Look on the end plate for the code, something like C374
Close ratio, 3.74 final drive.
I think early 1.3sr's had 3.18FDs

Also check boxes in your local scrappy, on astras etc etc.

bear in mind that some GTE/GSI's had F13W's on them... and also with all the gearbox messing about that people have done over the years some might not be what the end plate say ;) (even GM messed about in plant with what ever was left)

Most SRis have an F10 close ratio (my sri bounces off rev limiter in 5th gear at an indicated 130)

f10 4 and 5 speed, and f13 wide ratio 5 speed are all the same gear ratios

only difference where 4 and 5 speed, or the final drive cariations. Dont know why they called it an f13 as its the same as an f10 5 speed as far as im aware

the only nova gearbox that had different gear ratios to the rest was the f13 close ratio.

so how can you have an f10 close ratio lol

well theres no way my sri would reach the rev limter in 5th if it had a wide ratio!
Gearbox 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th rev FDR
F10/F13 3.55 1.96 1.30 0.89 0.71 3.31 4.18

so what f13 is that??

The difference between the f10 and the f13 is the torque its designed to take, the f13 takes 130ft/lb and the f10 takes 100ftlb, so as the GSi is the only nova to have close to 100ftlb (bar the sport) its the only one that came with the f13. (they obviously wanted some margin for error)

ahh so thats the differences

check your gearbox beside the selecrtor if it is an f10 or f13 and then look in at the end plate, clea it up, and look and see if it has w 418 or c 418 or whatever

1st gear is the same in all of them.

2nd goes from 1.96 to 2.14

3rd goes from 1.3 to 1.43 or something

they are the main differences

4th and 5th are different to

ive got a cr f13 with a 4.5 final drive fitted to mine, and from only taking a few quick runs up the road as the engines jsut been built nd needs run in, it is a massive difference from the others granted the 4.5 helps but pulling ay gear at any revs and it keeps pullin and doesnt drop the revs anywherenear as much

highly recomended

Thats Mark T's list of F10/13 ratios... which dont have the C/WR's and ive told him this several times lol.
Once inside the F10 and F13 there are NO differences that would make one take ore sustained torque than the others...
and by the way the rating is for NM not lbft ;)

A F10WR with a 4.18 FD would hit the limiter in 5th at about 139mph.
So if you have a f10, then its definently not WR.

well both my sris have done exactly the same bad both were fitted with f10s - so there must be a f10 cr.

Stuart

F10 CR in tis own right dosent really exist...

Knew i had this somewhere:
(which unfortunately goes no way to explaining why most c14se's have an f10! lol
