Correction 1.1.1973 was the cut off date for the black and silver plates

Yes, its Old K plate cars (ones with three letters, one to three digits and a K suffix) that can just about get away with it legally. A friend has an Old M plate mini (1975 iirc) with black and silver plates and never gets hassle, although theres a lad with a 1994 Fiesta RS1800 who has them and has got bo**ocked on several occasions. I believe cars registered in one of the British isles (Jersey, Guernsey, Man, not entirely sure which one) who use a plate with 5 digits in can use a black plate. The reason for not allowing them is because they are simply less visible, even if the silver letters are reflective.
I don't get any hassle from the Police when I prowl around Bognor in this, even though the plates are pressed Yankee 'show' plates.

This is my Dad's other car, which is obviously allowed to wear the black plates.

I've heard rumours that the black/silver plates don't show up on speed cameras

Thats Sussex police for you! A mate was on the a27 in Chichester (near Goodwood) on Sunday night and was followed and pulled over by a cop car when driving his decidedly un-pimp Range Rover. The cops chose to ignore the precession of Evos, Porsches and TVRs that sped past in order to tell him he had a brake light out. Tsk Tsk!
