Component speakers. A quality amp for them. A subwoofer with a good sound (some cheap ones are good) & a decent sounding amp to power it (again some budget ones are good). The quality of installation & wiring will make all the difference.

Avoid 6x9s & lots of extra speakers.

get about a 10" sub, very good for price and better for your average kinda of bass music.

15" normally require high power and more exspensive amps and are crap for the average dance or D&B music.

Yeah 6x9's are poo, go for 3 way 6inch speakers or even components?

WTF? Does anyone. And no, probably not.

Your thinking of a free air sub that uses your boot space/cubic area as a box as opppose to actually using a sub box

buy a jbl 1000 15 inch subwoofer, can run it with a small 800 watt amp, can pick both up on ebay for pennies, and i mean pennies i just sold the above to my mate for 3.29!! big mac meal :D

get a couple of decent speakers like the new inphase audio range with built in adjuctable tweeters.. and for a cheap ipod ready headunit, look no further than sony.

where abouts are you based? if your up manchester way i could sort you out if you called into shop where i work for a nice figure. :D

Half your budget will probably be spent on a decent HU tbh, about ?200. Think Pioneer or some of the lower spec Alpines. Look for a JL sub - can usually find a 10" on ebay for around ?50, and an amp to match the RMS power figure. If you're lucky you should be able to pick up a decent Alpine or Magnat amp for around ?100. Build your own sub box too. That leaves you ?150 to get a quality set of components :D

If correctly set up even cheap installs can sound ok. There is one more important factor to be ( in my mind ) taken into consideration .

Alarm the car first.

You can do it for less the ?40 , get a steering lock , gear lock an all. Deter the thievin scum as much as possible , then consider the ice. I installed 2 alarms real cheap ones , one under the hood , the other in the boot ( off the interior light . Both had red blinking leds on show. Thankfully it seemed to keep the light fingered at bay.
For my old Nova , the install was such : Jvc head unit sony 220watt 4 channel amp - the type that goes straight on the head unit , so no hard wiring to the battery Hidden on the driving side front shelf , pioneer 6x9s, on parcel shelf magnavox 4 inchers ( in original dash mount area ) and a vibe black air 10 sub. Sounded fine , nice n clear except the head unit jumped far too much ( seems to be a jvc trait as the new one in my cavvie is doing the same - and that car rides like its floating on air rather than the stiffness of the droppped nova ) so aviod jvc .People seem to love pioneer head units.....
May have to invest .
Ebay certainly has a few bargains..........

Good luck.
