hi all,

my car has recently started running lumpy and has a slight missfire, have changed the plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotar arm as they were old but still does it. a guy at work is going to bring in a timing light tomorrow, how would i go about checking the timing?

many thanks
chris

consult a haynes manual that is your best bet, as it covers all engines :)

Firstly, buy a haynes manual.

Secondly, connect the strobe to cylinder 1's HT lead+plug, shine it at the crank pulley, look for the notch on the pulley lining up with the pin on the block.

Its a GTE, you cannot adjust ignition timing.

Cam timing and Ignition Timing are two entirely different things.

You can move the distributor yeah, but it doesn't do much as the ECU controls the advance etc.
Its not like on a carb engine.

i adjusted the distributer to retard it, and it stopped the pinking. but, i still have a missfire. have fitted new plugs, rotor arm and dizzy cap, bought some magnecor leads but they havent arrived yet. they'll be here tomorrow, so if it's still not right, i'll take it to a garage.

whats the best thing to do? get some injector cleaner? or take the injectors out and clean them? it's really down on power tho...

injectors out, unltrasonic clean (try the uni workshop ;) ), renew the O rings and refit.

also check for air leaks in the air tract

im back home now... :( there is an air leak from a breather which joins the inlet tubing which isn't sealing properly, but the car has always been like it. dont know why all of a sudden, it will rev' randomly at idle ( up and down), missfire, pinking and loose power...

will soaking them in some redex help? or is that a no no?
