Ok - think its a good idea to quiz you guys on this:

Tyres for three spoke Nova alloys. The size is 165/70 r14 T

Currently running (original!!) Pirellis P2000's.

What can you get to fit these wheels and what do you recommend?

Bung that tyres size into mytyres and see what comes out and what your willing to pay.
Your less than likely to be able to get anything uber performance wise in that size, but you might beable to get soemthing decent there.

i used to have 185 on 1 of my old novas with sr 3 spokes, but tbh it doenst look right as the tyre dwarfs the wheel

I have seen 185 50 14s shoehorned onto the GSi three spokes, but these tend to be expensive. a 185 55 fitment has a much greater and cheaper range, for the price of 50 profile budgets, you could get better quality 55 profile tyres. Other routes to consider are 165 55 or 60 profiles; 175 50s (very dear..) or 175 60s. Yokohama make the A539 quite a lot of 14 inch tyre fitments and tend to be reasonable prices. I've never driven a Nova on them and don't know what the wet handling is like though. Check out the tyretest thing on mytyres (and look at the performance figures for Pirelli P6 tyres in 185 60 14s, these are apparently very good in all conditions and are fairly cheap). Didn't someone on here once say that 185 width is the best trade off for tyre on the road against the resistance to aquaplaning (something to do with the contact patch's pressure on the road)???

:s im concerned running 185's on 5.5" rims... id be scared silly to run them on a 4.5" rim that the 14" 3spokes are. Way too much tyre roll and chance to pop the bead in hard cornering

dannyb i didnt know you could get 175 50's, might look into them as im going for steels instead now, (somthing wider) had a look at the nova gsi alloys and the so narrow!

Yes, go for Steels! The Cav ones like I have are 5.5. In Toyos advertising rubbish you can get 195/55/14 TR 1s which will go on safely! Corsa Cs run 5.5J 14s but the pattern on the wheel is different (lots more smaller holes) I prefer look of Cav ones. Check Mytyres.co.uk for the 175/50s, they are very pricey though!!
Sorry to hijack the thread NovaPearl.

I ran 185/55 R14s on GSi 3 Spokes.

I'd recommend Toyo Proxes T1-R's or Goodyear Eagle F1's both have great grip although the Toyos wear a bit faster due to them being a softer compound.

There is also etyres.co.uk

i was looking for some weller steels on demons but they havent got them in 14's
so going to go the scrap and then get the smallest tyre possible for them. anyone know of a 6" wide 14" steel anywhere?

I have been on the look out for 6Js as well, but Vaux have never produced them, and 'rolling' steels to make them wider was outlawed years ago! Having a 6J allows for the Toyo T1 r in 195 45 14.... Im going to look into other manufacturers, maybe VW golf GTi Mk2 steelies, or something with a similar offset and PCD. I'll put up a thread Lew if/when I have found this Holy Grail of rusty excellence.

185 is about the widest you want on a 5.5" rim...
look on www.toyo.co.uk or other tyres suppliers to see what rim ranges are suitable for given profiles.

Thats true Stuart, I currently have shockingly bad 195 60 14 budget rubber on my 5.5Js! Apart from Weller, are there any other aftermarket steel wheel manufacturers out there? (I don't think Weller make the 14 x 6 with a 49 offset for a FWD Vauxhalls, only for Shove its and Firenzas etc) I'm sure I've seen a Golf mag with a euro look Mk1 on wide ass 14 steels before.

Current thinking is maybe some Marangoni Trios - unless someone can recommend something else in the budget price that i can get these at.

The advantages of being able to buy at trade prices and fit them yourself....

Eventually had to bite the bullet on this and got some Pirelli P3000's in 165/65 R14 T. Slight tyre roar at speed but just turning up the stero cancels it out.

It goes round corners now! The original (to the car) tyres were so hard that a new stanley knife blade would not cut them.....

Now having passed my test I thought some good tyres were a wise investment.

Also rebuilt the carburettor so the auto choke works!

So thats a total new exhaust, discs and pads, rebuilt brake callipers, carb rebuild, 4 new tyres and the stero sorted - that'll do nicely!
