hi guys, have recently bought some pretty nice alloys for my nova,

tyre size 185, 55, r, 15

front two go under the arches no problem, looks fat

offside rear wheel go under the arch no problem, looks fat

nearside rear wheel, goes under, but over the slightest bump or put someone in the back the little lip rubs.

wtf, how the hell does this happen?

any ideas?

cheers

Ian

you might have the wrong offset mate. its probably best to get the lips rolled. i had that problem with my mk1 gte, the offset on my wheels was like 35

Its quite normal for one side to have more clearence than the other side, its because of movement in the rear beam etc.
Having the arches rolled should sort it.

i was thinking of just taking the lips off with a hacksaw and then wet+dry it to a smooth finish, what do we think?

ooh dont do that. the arches are prone to rust without hacking them about and you gotta be carefull you dont cut too much cos they are double skinned

not the whole of the lip, just 1/2 - 3/4 of it, leaving a small lip left, nothing visable, as it is just the slightest part of the lip that catches the wheel, but too much for it not to be a problem, i will treat it with anti rust and all that bollox as well.

You can grind them back with a grinder.

really you need to change the tyres, 185/55x15 is a bit narrow and definately too tall a profile for a nova, you want 195/50 or 195/45x15's to stop the speedo under-reading. You could grind half the lip off the rear arches, but getting them properly rolled will help them avoid rusting within a few months.

Would try some rear beam poly bushes to tighten up the rear and reduce sideways movement because if you still have the original rubber mounts they will be probably be past their best.

May i ask why you suggest using a wider 195 tyre? i thought the 185 would clear the arches better as the side walls would prob slant down towards the lip. And you can prob get a 50 profile in 185's too.
I've never had any problem what soever with 185 width on a nova, dose'nt body roll or grip anymore or less than a 195 does in my experience, even 185 on my 7inch wide alloys are fine.
