View Full Version : 2.0l conversion, whats needed, what will do?
i've finally bitten the bullet and will be joining the big boys club. but first i have a few questions about what i need to fit the engine. most of the easy stuff is sorted but i need to know about driveshafts. i know there are 3 main routes. gte shafts with cav inners, tapered shafts with standard outers and big inners or big shafts with new hubs and big cv's.
obviously the latter is the best but what about the price. will i need that set-up or will the gte ones suffice? wheres best place to get whatever i decide to go for? the engines going to be running carbs, then a diff at a later date.
the other thing i need to know is whats the best way of sorting the engine mounts? cutting and lowering, or getting some ready made conversion ones. and can i use my TAS solid rubbers with the conversio mounts?
cheers
ben.
You will be able to use your tas mounts, yes...
Go for the Nove GTE/Cav inner combo for the shafts. The rest are a waste of money, unless you are running silly power, and even then its not that much of a problem.
Up to you on the drivers mount... buy a ready-made kit for ?50 off Mig. A mate has just bought one and the finish is very good!

Deffo agree about about the shafts. GTE ones should be fine.
Lowering the front-mount and using a 1600 big block metal mount is what I normally do, only because i've had a custom mount snap before when using the TAS mounts (it snapped across the un-used mounting hole), but the same has never happened on a vaux mount.... (plus its a lot cheaper - like 5quid).
will, do you or ben have any gte shafts? i put a deposit on a 20xe tonight.
Dont think so matey... they usually sell well, as you can imagine!
I will have a look though, as I was saving a set a while back! :thumb:

I'd buy a mount kit for ?50 mate. You'll get the one for the rear box mount to for that price. Also allows more flexible to change engines back in the future as its not as permanent as weld.
Shafts. I've been running cut, sleeved and welded shafts for 5yrs. Same idea as tapered shafts but without having to buy them, ie making use of the shafts you already have. The guy I bought the car off had em done by a decent local machine shop. Be interesting to see if they cope on my LET!!
Most people use a competition mount on the rear but use standard mount on the drivers front as competition ones seem a little harsh. Saying that you are running a fully stripped car! lmao

I would recommend using the TAS mounts over standard any day... the XE is a lot heavier and I have seen them wallowing around in the bay on std mounts...

Mines solid. Just buy a new one from Vaux. They wollow because people don't bother replacing them.
