Seeing as we had a thread hijack in mechanical, I thought I'd move the discussion over here, so what does everyone think is the best engine ever?

best design for ease of power i would say twin rotary engines. However, as for reliability there not that good. Esp after they've done about 100k they just coke up and die!

yeah, commonly put into 205's for rallying!

Or a Martin Bowyer built GM 1600 16v, he's getting like 250bhp out of them and putting them into rally cars, at a cost of about ?10k :thumb:

I was going to say Cosworth YB for the sheer amount of things you can do with it; but after seeing a 1991 Bugatti EB110 at Goodwood last year, I've changed my mind! The 3.5 litre, V12, 5 valves per cylinder, quad turbo engine this has is a work of art. It also has gear driven cams and produces 1bhp per 6.36cc. Its not the most powerful engine ever but for its prettiness, quality of engineering and exclusiveness it must rate surely?

Ferrari - any really lol

TVR maybe

and vauxhall/opel 1.3 diesel ecotek

TVR dont make engines. They used to use rover v8's and tune them a bit, I forget who's they use now.

I'll put forward the supertubro engine from the lancia delta integrales.

Perkins engines last forever!

TVR do make their own engines now, based on the Rover V8 and their own straight 6.

to be honest, the best engine is not all about how many cylinders or bhp it has

thats why I'm saying the c20xe (yes i know) but think about it with its 83x83 (i know its 80 something lol) pistons its a very Strong engine, top it off with a coscas head, its a perfect engine all round, every good tunability, and reliable

oh and it would be close with the c25xe apart from the cam belts need doing every 40k miles and at ?100 a pop :(

lol the reno 5 turbo engine lol

The Koenigsegg engine is "80% engineeered in-house by Koenigsegg. The block is from Ford Racing, but just about everything else is Koenigsegg developed" (http://www.bmwm5.com/articles.php?id=29&page=2) Its a big output but nothing really groundbreakingly exciting or unique (remember that RS200s can be tuned to 800bhp as can Skylines et al.)

TVR engines have been F**d and Rover sourced in the past (then worked over) but their engines are made in house now, iirc they are in line sixes and V12s. Again these are fine engines but theres nothing in the design which makes them unique, or thats going to make people use them the world over in all manner of cars like the many incarnations of the oh-so-versatile Chevvy V8!

The Perkins diesel engine range is a good example, its not all power, they just last forever and power so many different things!

lol the reno 5 turbo engine lol would be quality if it didnt keep overheating too much and too prone to head gasket failure

lol best engine ever!! There is no such thing.

However I agree with Baxter - The c20XE is an awsome engine and look what non Vaux cars are running them. The engine is run in all sorts of cars including Mk1/2 Escorts. Its an extreamly good engine. But its only a normal engine.

Or how about the newest engines - Take the 2.6l v8 run in the Radical SR8. That is awsome.

Then if you think back to the turbo charged engines of the F1 Turbo age 1.5l and 750bhp per/litre  Thats 1125bhp out of a 1.5l engine :D woohoo

But these are all for cars. Ship engines are also stoooopidly powerful, hows up to 93,000bhp sound? lol they are a tad on the large side though. Then there are jet engines, rockets and steam engines. yada yada yada.

yeh shevy small block, but what about ford crate engines?

NOTE: jet engines are measured in something like numeric pounds of thrust per square inch or something like that not BHP therefore - ireliventlol

db_1.2
13-06-06, 08:26 PM
are we going by BHP, torque or power to weight ratios or what Lol cus this could go on forever as its only opinion, what about drag engines? some blokey on a dvd tried sayin it was 6000 bhp? but i thought it was a supercharged v8?

What about ummm twin turbo straight sixes? on the side of power to weight ratios anyway..

13-06-06, 08:28 PM
YEH! flat six's or whatever they use in the f1 cars perhaps flat 8? or maybe flat eric???!!!:p espeshily the twin turbo flat 6's
