I'm trying to decide on a new exhaust for my GTE Nova. It just seems hit and miss as you can never be sure what they are going to sound like!! Can anyone email or link to some video/sound files of their exhaust so I can get a general idea?? Would be VERY helpful.

I was thinking maybe Magnex but do these sound the same as Piper??

Thanks :)

all exhaust sound different on diff cars...

i've had a magnex system on 2 sri's and a valver, and it sounded different on all three cars :S

cant go wrong with a magnex though, but it will need to be second hand due to them not being produced anymore

ashley have always been used in old skool rally compatition, like on the old mk2 escorts and so on, they sound pretty good on any car. Even my dad has a ashley system on his vectra sri 140, and it sounds mean and it only a lazy old 2.0 ecotec std engine.

yeah i bought the last ever mead Magnex GSi system of eBay (apparently, according to Magnex) for ?120

My personal choice is Ashley systems, not overpriced, i get free delivery on them, easy to fit and proven pretty good power gains!!

Magnex has a 'deeper' sound doesn't it? As compared to something like Ashley's which have a 'racier' revvy note?

Basically I don't wont my ears to hurt after an hour on the motorway!! ;)

Surely you can still say if an exhust is deep, revvy, loud, quiet, smooth, grunty... etc.?? There is nothing to distinguish them otherwise... apart from tailpipe style!!

Bingo :thumb:

In my experience, the Peco I had on mine sounded fine (by "fine" I mean it didn't drone at speed or rasp on acceleration like most Nova exhausts I've heard seem to do) yet when it was on my mate's 1.3SR it sounded poop. All the Magnex exhausts I've come across also seem to all drone really badly at motorway speeds. Scorpion seem to give an Ok sound, but the build quality is sh*t.

Go find a local powerflow dealer - most of them will build you a system to your specification including exhaust note.

dont put a Rage back box onto an ashley system then! i managed 110dB with mine at 3800rpm

Ive got a Powerflow from the HQ in Exeter. Had it 5 yrs with no probs. Got a straight through centre for when the turbo was fitted. Isnt loud by any stretch of the imagination.

just really deep & burbles on tick over like a drowning whore.

I put a PECO (used) on my GTE 16v last yr & that was quieter than the std GM back box.

remember exhausts get louder as they coke up on the inside. & Stainless systems tend to be a bit deeper & less raspy than mild steel systems.

Yes, that deep motorway drone is what I want to avoid. I'd rather it was a sharper sound so it didn't do that when cruising! I drove 3hrs down the M4 in my 1.3SR, fitted with a Piper back-box and my ears were ringing when I finally stopped the engine!! :)

You sure it wasn't blowing or anything, Ashleys sound great on any car.
It even sounds mint on my 1.2i :D
Think a 4-1 manifold makes it sound a lot nicer too.

It is a bit loud on motorways etc, but i only have 4gears so 70mph is like 3-4K rpm, which would explain why its loud. With 5th gear at 2000rpm, it should be ok.

Didn't know that about the direct from factory=cheaper price, might look into that when mine has rusted and needs replacing.

Just looked on Peco website, which says they do a back box for the 1.6 Nova, but then in the 'notes' box it says NOT for GTE/GSi... what's all that about?? :)

my magnex is really quiet, even when it was stipped out, it wasn't that loud going to pv on the motorway, and now with interior again, i can hardly hear the exhaust, unless i floor it

i resently fitted an Ashley system and manifold - sounds amazing real nice tight sound, backfires and pops, sounds like a proper car not some chav boy racer.

Mike
08-06-06, 01:08 PM
mongose are ok, but not relly heard all that much of them. A freind of mine used to have one on his SRi, sounded alright tbh. But Ashleys are way cheaper!!

Nath
08-06-06, 01:45 PM
exactly cheaper is the key word, mine only lasted about a year and half before it started to rot

SRlew
08-06-06, 03:16 PM
mines only got a little bit of surface rust on the bottom part, where the water will sort of sit on it. but im not botherd cause im going to heat wrap it, and my brothers with heap wrap on is still mint!

Mike

Mongoose are good exhausts, stainless steel, a lot like Magnex.

My ashley manifold did snap clean in two a month or so ago, lol, i just welded it back up, mine also has a brace fitted as they always snap at the end of the collector(where 4 branches go into 1)
