whats happened to my engine ???

yesterday whilst driving down the motorway,white smoke started coming through the bonnet,so i pulled over,opened the bonnet and oil had gone everywhere,the car would start again eventually but it would just smoke and has hardly no power at all ?
what will the problem be ?
its a gsi by the way.

is the smoke from the engine bay or the exhaust? how much oil is there in it, any warning lights on?

definately the engine bay mate,its from the oil filter thing mate,i dont have a clue you see so thought i better ask the people that know best,o warning lights are on though,oil level was full.

is the oil filter leaking oil?
does it start and run ok?
is it def the oil filter or could it be the rad, is it smoke or steam?

When you say the oil level was full, was that as soon as it happened, or did you give it time to settle?

yes the oil filter is leakig oil,it starts eventually but it has no power at all,have to get it to about 4000 revs before it will set off,its definately smoke mate.id say it was definately the oil filter

well id left it about an hour or so before i went down the motorway mate

what condition is the filter in? is it rusty? when was it changed last
where abouts are you from?

its not rusty mate,but from looking at it id say it could do with a change,not an expert on cars though so just wanted to know what could be wrong with it ?
im from bradford mate.
the oil must have exploded out or something because it was all over the underside of the bonnet ?

the oil doesnt normally come from the filter unless its rotten or not tight.
the rocker gasket could go but its not high pressure so wouldnt really blow out just pour out
you need to try and figure where the oils coming from
any engine bay pics?

i dot at the minute mate,ill see if i can get some up for you though,whenever i try start it it just blows white smoke out of the filter.

which filter? the air filter?
if so it sounds like the headgasket

it wouldnt come from putting too much oil i the car would it ?

if its been overfilled the it could blow a seal somewhere

depends what seal it is as theres plenty of them
you need to locate where the oils coming from but you also say theres no power. a blown oil seal wouldnt cause this.
iv got to go out now so maybe someone else can help you.
if you decide to replace the engine then ill have this one off you as im looking for a e16se to rebuild
