right got me a GSi dash to replace the mk1. but just need to know a few things.

you know the middle knob, the air speed one. will the plug off my mk1 fit into the back of the mk2 one?

the cable the connects to the rear of the right hand knob (air direction one) will the cable from my mk1 fit on to the mk2?

will the electrical plug that plugs into the back of the cig lighter from the mk1 light fit into the mk2 one?

also you know the plastic trim parts that go around the clocks and to the left and right of it, and the part with the cig lighter on, are they sprayable? and will it stay on?

help appriciated. lew

any guides around? i looked on nova-land but it wouldnt work.

Yes; but you'll need to move a couple of the wires round.

I *think* you need to use the Mk2 cables... However on my saloon I used the Mk1 items and bodged them on :D

Yes.

Yes; but rub them down properly first, use a couple layers of primer and finish with lacquer.

Undo all the screws you can find - bear in mind there's a few up behind the dash near the top, fixing to the bulkhead - and pull hard :D

Its possible, I did it with mine in. they clip to the side of the heater matrix down the bottom which you can get to fairly easy with the dash in; to get to the top you'll need to remove the centre dash vents and surrounding section (the bit to the left of the dial cowl). When you see the ends and how the connect you should be able to see whether its the Mk1 or Mk2 cables you need.

yer cheers for that mate. finished the dash bout hour ago. just a few little things to sort out. you might be able to help.

in the middle of the dash i can see the wireing loom (between the windscreen and dash) so its obviosly sitting low in the middle. what can i do. have i missed a bolt?

also. how do i remove the parts to the left and right of the clocks. i aint sure how to get the lights knob off, and how to get the heater vents out of the way to access the screws.

ah and you know the part that connects to the heater (behind dash) that goes up to the windscreen. well the mk1 one wont fit will it?

think thats about it, just got to sort those out, fit my immobilisers into the dash and get the two parts that surround the ignition and indicator stalks. or do the mk1 ones fit?

does feel loads nicer!

cheers, lew

From memory... I *think* there is a bolt in the middle, or two (one either side of the middle) that bolts from the top under the dash to the bulkhead. Mine was broken on my GSi dash so it didn't marry up quite right either under the windscreen.

Headlight knob - pull it out, and you'll need a small screwdriver to push up a tang underneath, then two L shaped tools to pull the whole switch out. Difficult to explain, but the Haynes covers it in detail iirc.

The left hand (centre) heater vents - if you turn the passenger side one so that its facing the driver, then lever it forwards and out with a screwdriver (its held in by a plastic lump on the top and bottom of the vent). You'll see a screw in the housing behind it once you've removed it.

Mk1 ducting won't fit the Mk2 dash.

right will look for the bolts then.

and yer just seen that in the back of haynes. but i couldnt even get the knob off. tried useing a small screwdriver. and where will i get some thing like an L shape?

and i'll be getting new ducting then. is there a way to make hot air come out of the centre ones aswell as cold?

I just bent a couple bits of wire with some pliers, poked around with them for a few minutes, worked a treat :D

I guess having heat coming from the centre vents would require some work on the heater matrix itself, modify it so it can blow hot air forwards...

oh i thought it would of been just a case of make my own ducting to direct the hot air to the middle vent.

right i got the knob off eventually! then thought i broke it so put it back on to see if i had, then got it stuck on again! but in the end i got it off again. but still carnt get the the other part out.
i cut 2 strips of 20gauge steel and folded them other (twice as thick) the bent the ends over. that didnt work, so looks like i'll try your method.

is there some sort of clips holding it on? as i just started pulling on it and it wasnt going anywhere.

also does the light knob connectors (behind knob) from the mk1 fit the mk2?

cheers, lew
