i've been looking at gearboxes for my t40 gte lump in progress.

i.ve been looking at previous threads and gear ratio charts and also the gearbox on ebay.a re-built by 2tperformance. In which box can you find the 2nd and final drive ratios quoted by T2

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vauxhall-Nova-Corsa-Rally-Race-Gearbox-LSD-4-53_W0QQitemZ8058107366QQcategoryZ43120QQrdZ1QQcmdZ ViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vauxhall-Nova-Corsa-Rally-Race-Gearbox-LSD-4-53_W0QQitemZ8058107366QQcategoryZ43120QQrdZ1QQcmdZ ViewItem)

also is this really a bad priced box as i've heard on herd before?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO dont do that you silly person lol.

NTL is having issues but i assume that the link is to a ?500 box that includes the "option" of a LSD for another ?500 lol... BIG con.

you can get an F13CR gearbox for ?50 topsish and then another ?50-70 will see the 4.53 FD if you can find one or the 4.18FD which is a little more common.

In my sig link there is a speed in gear calculation link that has link to nova gear box info and possible sources of the FD's etc.

There is definatly something dodgy about those boxes. They have been selling them for months now. ?500 for a nova gear box! I don't think so! And yes the LSD is an extra ?500.

I must admit that it does look very enticing when you first read the title, I almost fell for it my self a few months back.

you'd maybe be best off with 4.18 anyhow instead of the 4.53, which maybe a little too low for road use. I have the 4.18fd and f13 CR gears and its brilliant, perfect for road use and abit of ragging about. Having some real problems though with traction in 1st and 2nd, i've bought some bigger wheels though, hopefullly thats gonna help and not have to fork out the bucks for an LSD.

sounds like the best plan to just get 4.18 fd. i havent got a box at the moment as i'm putting a gsi t40 in my sr. would you recomend a ?50 f13cr box and slap in a fd, or get a reconditioned box from somwhere???
i like shiny things

Stuart

the ?50 one will be fine.

if you want it shiny then clean the box up and paint it lol

I'm going to sound off now but trust me i'm not. The key to sorting the wheelspin is down to tyre choice, suspension geometry and driver awareness. the last 2 of those cost nothing and the first is a cost that comes around anyway. I've never suffered from it when putting the power down hard in the first 2 gears so it is possible

johnny27
24-05-06, 10:51 PM
What is involved in "suspension geometry" to get it right?
As for tyre's i would'nt want suited tyre's for tarmac, gravel and so on, cause at the moment the car is used on the piblic roads. Have espically trouble spinning in the wet, can you suggest a good tyre for grip in the wet?
Also i think i'm aware of trying to keep traction, its just extreme spinning, caused from what you suggested, its just annoying not being able to use full throttle and power. Thanks Dan

I myself would def recommend to use the CR gears and 4.18 fd. I have drove my old nova with a 4.18 and WR 14 inch wheels, and currently driving my new nova with 4.18fd and CR cluster gears and the difference is great in accerlation, the car feels so much faster. Also as a side point my car has a noisy exhaust, and its lovely to hear the difference when switching from 1st gear to 2nd, you can tell without doubt its got closer gears. Sound simlar to a motorbike switching gears in the powerband, the next gear is simlar revs to the previous, although its not quite as good in the nova

what engine u got johnny? where bouts in ni are u from?

sorry for spamming just a quick question - how great is the advantage in putting in the 4.18 final drive to a f13 cr box, or just keep it standard final drive, will be running in a 1200 with a few tweeks. Shane

johnny the only tyre i have used for years now is the goodyear eagle f1's. Very good in the dry and equally as good in the wet. As regards the suspension make sure all the bushes are in good condition for starters along with the shocks etc, then make sure the tracking and camber etc is setup properly. Its something so small and yet not many check it.

In the dry or the wet i to can get mine to spin like a mofo regardless of gear, but when driving it properly i can honestly get traction from zero mph and nailing the throttle, mine doesnt 'come on cam' as it has power from nothing right through to the limiter. this is regardless of a diff or not so practice is the best advice once you have covered the other bases as there is no reason apart from yourself after that lot.

In reply to the last question the difference with a 4.18 is worth a hell of alot over a standard 3.74 one and completes a nice build, makes it drive like it should

cheers dan

is there any way of distinguishing a 4.18 final drive asi have an f 10 box split atm and i know some of them had the 4.18 final drive

If you guys don't mind enlightening me, why doesn't anybody mention a 3.94? Wouldn't it be a good compromise, with less wheelspin than a 4.18, but better acceleration than a 3.74? Or am I missing something?

novamadman
26-05-06, 12:55 AM
its a good comprimise between 3.74 and 4.18 but 3.94 is a fairly common final drive and gives decent acceleration, 4.18 is that bit better for rallying, track, fast road whatever is use

shane

Adam

Most boxes have a 3.94 FD.
1.2/1L boxes etc.

Dan
26-05-06, 09:00 PM
having owned all 3 variations the 4.18 is the one to have, going to a 3.94 was ok ish for a while but when i got the 4.18 i wish i had done it in the first place.

The wheelspin as said before is not an issue, its everything else around the gearbox and who's controlling the car that is the flaw in launching the car

novamadman

dan have you any experience of the 4.29 or 4.53

has anyone?

shane

Stuart
27-05-06, 09:03 AM
ive not run mine with the 429 ..yet..

jim has the 453 and WOW its mental!!! lol your not frantically changing gear all the time like some make out, but you certainly go round he rev counter MUCH faster than with a 418. Its an awesome option if you dont mind being deafend while "cruising" along at say 70

johnny27
28-05-06, 03:51 PM
would def love to have a drive in a fast nova with a 4.53. BTW Harry hockley motorsport sells the 4.53 pinion and 4.53 crown wheels seprate for the nova gearbox. Its quite expensive from him but maybe an option as the 4.53 is so hard to find in vaux boxes, and i believe that "all" astramax petrol cans did'nt have the sought after fd like some ppl say all of them did

johnny27
28-05-06, 03:52 PM
also sells the 4.29 as far as i can remember

novamadman
28-05-06, 04:29 PM
did a mk1 1600 diesel astramax van have a lsd as standard?

?220 for 4.5 crown wheel and pinion

i take it its new and hard to get but why the funkin mad price!!

johnny27

no astra max had a LSD. Some of the petrol ones had a 4.53 fd, normal open diff

Stuart

there was a second hand one on rallyusedparts for ?150 and it sold very quickly, i imagine if hockley is new its probably not a bad price for someone that really wants one but tbh i dont think i want one that badly lol

has anyone dealt with them before do u think they would move much on price.

by the way i now have 3 4.18 final drives ! lol if anyone wants one

When fitting the 4.18 into an everyday car, is it also worth it fitting a wide ratio 5th gear like I've heard?

its erm kinda worth it if you do lots of motorway miles etc. but the step might be too steep between 4th and 5th.... ive not tried it personally but hey

Yeah, as if you have a 4.18fd in a CR box, the engine is at something like 3-4k in 5th at 70/80mph on the motorway, so it gets a bit annoying, especially if you have a noisy exhaust.

i dont think i would mind that thinking on it now but probably when ive had to listen to it for a few months id be pretty naffed off

so is it hard to change the fifth gear? - stuart?

i dont know fook all about gearboxes, but i was thinking.......would it be possible to make/build/convert a gearbox to run say, close ratio 1st, 2nd, 3rd....then have 4th and 5th further apart for top end speed cruising etc??

not sure if ive got any terms right or if im just dreaming but any info would be good ?

cheers.....draper (gearbox virgin)

1,2,3,4 are all on the same input shaft so you cant change from the pre determined clusters for those gears. you can however change 5th and the FD

i want my car to accelrate quick, but i also want it to be reasonable on the motorway or long journeys etc, dont want to be on the limit at only 80-90 mph

novamadman
29-05-06, 10:42 PM
5th is 5th lol final drive is the final drive from pinion to crown wheel

i thought 80 or 90 on a motorway would have been more than reasonable lol
