Temperature Gauge Problem

When I start up my 1.0 nova the temperature gauge shoots straight up past the red and begins to wobble erratically. It even does this when I remove the lead to the sensor. Any ideas as to what might be wrong, bearing in mind that I have replaced the clock already and it acts the exact same way?

Check the wiring? could be a short.
