I've got standard SR wheels and tyres, and I run them all at 30psi. Works fine for me. The front left has a slow puncture which make the handling a bit twitchy if it gets to low.

for steel rims the frunt should be 24 psi and the back 27 psi.

The lower the psi the more rubber is in contact with the ice so therefore lower is the answer to your question.

40? I wouldn't like to be in that when it has a blow out at 80mph.
WOW post here :) that would be the post before i spun the car in the snow lol
the more pressure the harder the ride and the less grip as less area on the road. the front should be a little higher than the back as the front of the car is heavier. and to answer mickys question, its a combination of what car and what wheels/tyres, not just what car, bigger wheels have more pressure than smaller wheels, and low profile tyres have more pressure than standard profile tyres.
