how hard to get on 17s

ive just got myself an sr and am looking to get 17s how much arch work is need to get these to fit and how badly will affect my handling :-/?

will need to modify rear arches (and probably fronts) quite alot of work (so I've read/bee told) - 16's better for less work.
How low is car?

well i have not actually bought the car yet its just a consideration but cheers for the help....... its a battle between buying a nova or corsa

ive got a set off 22" BMW alloys on mine and its been slammed. bit of a bugger getting the 5 studs to fit but hey a xthread aint too bad ;)
