I've just ordered an Evo 5 bonnet vent for my nova and i was just wondering whether its been done before and does it look smart...
Cheers
(don't know why i'm askin coz its on its way anyway)
yeah mate looks well smart, just had one fitted on mine! Only problem is finding a way to stop the rain getting in as it can start causing probs under the bonnet, still trying to think of a solution 4 it!!!!

the thing ive heard of is that ppl are putting perspex under the vents, still see through but stop water aswell.

:D yeh they do put perspex underneath it as too much air effects some parts of the engine some how. but dont worry addin the perspex gets rid of this prob

too much air gettin in ent the main problem- thats the idea of vents ;) key thing is water really, in the electrics and damp here there everywhere on electrics under the bonnet wont help those cold starts in the morning!
going back to the air idea, hes not wrong - if theres anything other than standard in the bonnet - then why bother with functional vents? if your thinking styling then surely adhesive ones fibreglassed and smoothed in just as good? if theres a petrol drinking valver in there then sure, it needs a lot more air intake than say a 1.2
but my nova 1.4SR hasnt got any additional vents to standard, and because it has a weber carb and ram air filter - if you are on the motorway for a good enough time - and at a rate of knots (70-80 officer :P) my carb can freeze and cause cut outs while i wait for the carb to thaw out!
im sure this has been done in previous posts have a search. in some cases even with standard carbs, if people have put air filters on, they too get carb icing - just from a bolt on filter!

I used to get the carb freesing over prob when i was a wee young 'un. if i had girlie passengers they didn't understand why i had to pull over. They must have wondered if those 'busy fingers' rhumours may have been true. But no! - It was to thaw the carb out!
You can get a hot air kit (or make one yourself) to sort this problem out.
There are numorous ways to prevent water getting into the electrics.
If the vent must be functional (make sure that only the outer skin, and not the underneath supports are cut when fitted), have an angled platform/channel fitted underneath onto which the rainwater will run, so it is guided away from the electrics. Also, spray on some water dispersant onto all electrics. Just incase.
if u have a k&n or other performance enhancing air kit (I have a 1.2 with K&N and notice a pretty impressive difference / sound) and are making vent functional, to prevent/reduce chance of freezing, simply run the existing warm air metal inlet pipe from manifold up, over engine and have it blowing near the filter. You may need to get a longer (heat resistant) pipe however those metal bendy ones cannae half stretch!
As for rain etc, martys suggestion is good. U could build a type of wedge shaped scoop under the bonnet (like a cheese shaped wedge) with 2 air tubes running off from the sides at right angles. Rain water could be channeled away as it collects at the bottom of the wedge (through a pipe like a plug hole) whereas the extra wind power would travel through the 2 air pipes off to the sides and to the filter. This would reduce rain damage almost totally but still provide the air needed.
Sounds weird but easy to assemble (sort of) and practicle.
