Just placed an order for the paint for my car from local paint shop. Will be respraying myself (once I find lock up - or see if I can convince my mum to let me use her double garage!)
Anyway - etch primer (for bare metal), plastic primer (for bumpers), general primer surfacer (for general priming), 2 pak paint in carmine red (3 ltrs), all reducers, cleaners etc AND a gimp monkey air mask & goggles (free flow air resparator to use 2pak paint with - clips onto belt) all for ?250 - the mask alone was ?125! Not bad when u consider I was quoted ?1000+ for full respray and fixing up of body work. Guy at the paint shop reckons providing its mixed properly will go on much better, last longer and with 1/4 of the hastle of cellulose (alot cheaper too!). With all other bits purchased (bumpers, skirts, tinted glass, window surrounds, spoiler, ariel, splitter, paint, new ice and full GSi interior + cloth to recover seats with and a spray gun + compressor) I reckon I'm almost there. Only spent about ?700 - bargin! :D which to convert a 1.2 to GSi lookalike is bloody good. The cynic would say why not just buy a GSi - but wheres the fun in that :p
( + cant afford the insurance & u cand get GSi for ?700 - already looked :>)
Look out for my website coming soon showing my trials and tribulations of project GSi!
Just though I'd share that with u
Ade ;)

managed to convince me mum to use garage. got paint this morning - looks peice of piss to do - just gotta make sure the garage is spotless along with the body. its all in the prep u know ;).
couple of three coats should be enough. Paint guy reckoned doesnt need lacquer/clear coat - ne1 out there who has used 2pak advise otherwise (I do a fair bit of m/way driving so want max protection at the front).

If applied properly wont need lackering cos it`ll be like a mirror but if its your first time painting then it depends on how lucky you are :)

hey ade lightly spray the walls, ceiling and floor of your garage with water before you start - after FULLY sweeping up beforehand and allowing any dust you agitated to settle, this sticks any u didnt get the walls when the compressors going so it doesnt agitate it and float on your wet paint

sorry but u cant get any easier than cellulose paint, its so easy to use and u dont kill ur insides with it. if cellulose paint comes out the gun you get a good finish if area is prepped right. diff story with 2pak stuff.
2pak paint is a lot harder to spray and youll need to lacquer it, especially if you spraying in a garage cos ull have no oven to bake paint in and lots of shit floating about in air. my m8s a sprayer and sprayed his car in his garage, no lacquer in engine bay but lacquered the rest of car, huge difference and the engine bay looks crap. rest of car is a very very good finish.

good luck tho and i hope the paint was cheap cos youll need another 3litres after uve tried painting for the first time :D

celly paint dulls and needs a lot of polishing to get a nice finish.
you only need to lacquer basecoats, i.e metallics. 2k is a very tough paint when cured thru and doesnt need much polishing to get a good finish, providing you put it on right. the only problem with 2k is, apart from killing you, that it sticks to EVERYTHING, so if you are extracting the dust without exhaust filters into your street your neighbours might not be to chuffed with red dust all over thier cars and windows, thus meaning more polishing for you.

2-pac is a pain to work with!,i use it at work alot,u will need a 2-pac harderner and thinners too, the mixing ratio is....2 part paint, 1 part hardener, 1/2 part thinners, the hardener is essential!, celly is much better to use but 2-pac will have a better finish,if its ya first time sprayin...good luck!

have sprayed before (got degree in special effects :D) but not used 2 pak on such big area - planning on spraying doors, bonnet and hatch seperately as need to get round inner areas properly. figure just take time and get prep work dun properly should be ok. As for overspray/out of garage - huge piece of muslin over vent hole will work a treat at capturing most of excess spray in air. will be venting "naturally" (open door at one end with open door at another) Have plenty of time to let it dry so not in a big rush and been advised dont need to bake it on as will air dry in 24 hrs with curing in 3 days tops if fairly warm environment.
