im acquiring a free 1.4spi engine (36,000K) and want do build it up to be faster than my 1.2i (not a hard task)

im gettimg a set of 40's, cam and a 4branch

my question is, what the best head to get or best way of modifying the original head to work best with this setup

would it just be better to stick an SE head on?.

cheers all

I wouldnt bother with 40s tbh mate on a 1400 just get a weber 32/34 and get it set up properly.

If your engine is in good enough condition get a mildish cam, 4 branch + sports system, weber 32/34, should see you good gains and save you some cash aswell.

you can't use the mpi head if your gonna run with a weber 32/34, you'd need to use either t40s or mpi

hes getting T40's..... thus it dosent matter.

is there any modifiactions i can make to the NZ head to get god performance as 60bhp isnt quite what im after lol

ive heard you can have the ports "cut" out and have round ally welded in and blended to make the ports better but thats a mega costly job.

have a read of my guide

if your not using the sri head, a 1200carb or 1300 head would be abit of an improvement.

Theres not really much point at all.
Just fitting a std 14se head would probably give a 6-8bhp gain over a Nz head.

ive just found myself a cylinder head off a mk2 astra 1.4 carb

there are two carb'd engines in the mk2

14NV (nova sr)
E14LV

how can i tell the difference between these? as the head is dismantled from the car.

theres a 12bhp difference between the two so it could be a good step

ive checked the shape of the ports,

inlet ports are square, exhaust are round with a square bottom edge (cathedral?)

what head is this?

Adam

14nv.
All 8v ohc exhaust ports are the same shape.

I've never heard of a e14lv.

what is the difference between sri heads apart from the ports being different? cheers

Valves are bigger.
And it flows a lot better.

According to Autodata the E14LZ was used in the Kadette and belmont. It also has it listed for Nova/Corsa A but I would imagine it was more likely to have been used in the Corsa A i.e. in foreign countries.

It also says it only put out 60bhp :wtf:

60bhp is the 1.4SPi 8v engine.

afaik the mpi head has the 38mm valves. What shape are the inlet ports?

Stanley

1.4SR/1.4SPi head.

Stanley

so its the same head on the SPi as is on th SR?

how is the SR 12BHP greater then?

im baffled

so would i just be better sticking with the SPi head given the choice

Adam

Sr has no cat, and a much better cam, and better flowing manifold and downpipe. Theres your 12 extra bhp on the SR ;)

1.4SPi engine is very restricted as std, which is why people blame the Spi system for a lack of power, when it clearly isn' the SPI thats the problem.

Yeah, they are the same head.

Stanley

my plans are to fit a cam, 40's and a four branch anyway so i think il give the SR head a miss

the engine im getting has done 36K so it should be a good strong engine for that.

what could i nick off the SR head to put in my 1.2i until the engine is ready?

Adam

SR cam would fit if you have the complete top end and not just the head.
Nothing much else is any good to you, the head is almost the same as your 1.2i head.

You need a round port 1400 head, off a corsa 8v sri, nova sri, mk3 astra Si,Ls etc.

Stanley

stoopid question time - could i not just put the sr head on my 1.2???

swap manifolds etc etc

Adam
08-05-06, 07:05 PM
Nar, it would mess up compression etc, as the cyl bore size is different on a 1.4sr than a 1.2i.

The head is pretty much identical to your 1.2i. Same ports etc.

So theres no point,Lol.
