take off the rocker cover and check to see if its just broke or threw a rocker off. I would'nt use a cam any lower than a 295 with t40s and 1600 block. AST2 is'nt bad and its a 295, plus they're quite cheap 2nd hand. But there's better out there, but saying that, i was very pleased with mine and don't see need to change it, powerband starts at just over 3000rpm so its more usable than higher 300/305 cams

as stated the ast2 is a good cam, also very good is the piper bp300. With both of these i would recommend a decent head also.

Personally for me the ast2 has power from about 1200rpm right through to 7000rpm. Which allows me to pull from 15mph in 5th right through to the limiter with ease when i am feeling lazy, but alot of that depends on the actual spec of the rest of the engine and how well setup it is.

Check beofre you start lossing the head off. And it would depend on your engine setup where the powerband would start, as said by Dan. When i was running the 40s and ast2 i had no power below 3000rpm, but i reckon the 40s don't like tidling about anyhow, even with std cam it takes full throttle for the 40s to open up and deliver power properly.
