View Full Version : Finally got twin 40's B+ head, and kent ast2 on!

It all started a few weeks back when after wrongly changing into 1st gear at 60 mph  and dropping two valves (smashing a couple of rockers and valve stems? along the way). Luckily the valves had bent at right angles inside the head and had only just to say marked the top of the piston!

So, me and my dad set to work putting on all the kit I have been saving up over a period of time, Snowfaces B+ Blydenstein head starting the ball rolling I think more than a year ago lol! Since then my dad had sourced me a perfect pair of reconned Dellorto 40 carbs and I had reluctantly paid out for a brand new kent ast2 cam kit lol. After requiring a filter king I knew I was almost there!

Since there isn't enough hours in a day, the rebuild took the best part of a week! A lot of time was trying to get round problems using the parts we had available but I was stuck waiting for a throttle cable for a couple of days due to the SR one being too short! After a quick test and the car going slower than it did before, I realised something was wrong and the throttle linkage was fouling on the web of the carb and only half opening! Sorted that and after giving it a few revs and hearing those twin 40's growl I had a permanent smile across my face! Even more so when I took it for spin, with the roar from the engine and greatly improved acceleration I was over the moon!

The experience was short lived though, after a day full of using that new power ;) I felt the car misfiring and heard a nasty rattling from the engine, I thought not again! So off came everything to diagnose the problem. This time is was a shattered valve spring and upon inspection the spring had partly started to perish. I had kept the valve springs on that came with the B+ head and assumed they were already uprated so I'd kept the Kent ones as spares. So I decided whilst it hopefully wouldn't be apart again for a while to fit new hydraulic lifters aswell!

All back together again and up to now everythin is running very nicely. I'm not sure is anything needs running in so I aren't revving the nuts off it yet but I don't need to, its just keeps on pulling through all the gears!

In a year or so I'm thinking a 1.6 16v on twin carbs hummmm :)

Good job mate, get some photos up of the work now!

Next get it to your nearest RR for a full setup, you'll notice alot of differance with the right chokes, idle jets etc.

Yes nice and loud and very growly! lol

Sound lovely through 3000-5000 rpm, sometimes sound a bit like a scooby imo.

i don't mean to sound like an idiot, but i've used twin 40s before and also weber 32/34 dtml with k&n filter. Altough the 40s where very loud and growling, i found that the 32/34 made very simlar sound, but obivously not as loud or good sounding, with the dtml you could def tell that it was'nt a normal injection or std carb induction roar with a free flow filter, its sounds alot more rally(ish) or tuned. Has anyone else found the same, i accept that it is not near as good sounding than the 40s but it still turns alot heads.

yer was woundering cause my brother has an xr2 with a 32/34 weber on it, and when you get to high revs, it sounds well nice. im hoping 40's will sound even better, i'v also taken all sound deadening out ready for when i get some to see if i can hear themlol

ill go with you on that one, as my 40s sound similar to the old 32/34 i had, again, not as loud but similar noise under load, if you can forget the growl that twin carbs give you lol

I had the 32/34 Weber on before changing to twin 40's and agree that it does sound similar, but nowhere near as nice! I'm selling that aswell if anyone fancies it in the parts for sale section.

Got round to taking some pics today, I was going to take a few of the car aswell but it could do with a clean so I'll do those later!

Its a 1.4SR, if you have a GSI/GTE then you will need a Filter King or similar fuel pressure regulator to lower the pressure.

The ram pipes are 45mm, from Eurocarb on ebay, each one made out of a solid piece of aluminium. Made to a very high standard.

Thanks man i have a 1.6 sv and i have a FACET fuel pump with a regulator on it. Your ram pipes look sweet mine are only 15mm so im gonna get a set of those 45mm do you know if the size of the ram pipes makes things sound different.

would twin 40's fit on my 1.2spi or is there any other ways of making it sound nice i hav a green induction kit and a sportex 4" tail pipe

be aware that bigger ram pipes would mean no filter or the face of the pipes being to close to the face of the filter if you managed to squeeze one on, i know a few do run like this, but i have always ran a filter rather than risk sucking something down into the engine.

Also ram pipes make next to no difference power/torque wise so it would purely be a risk for showing off purposes only which imo dont outweigh the cost of the engine. 16mm are more than ample
