View Full Version : vauxhall engine pick-up
as you have probably noticed standard vauxhall engines dont 'do' much below about 3k, so as im rebuilding a 1.6 8v how can i improve the engine below 3k rpm? lightened flywheel maybe? the engine will be running t40's and some cam (any advice on which to go for?) so any help welcomed!
cheers

as you prob know, you won't get decent power down low with a high(ish) lift cam. You'd be seeing power after 3000rpm, but as you said a lightned flywheel would help you rev up quicker to the power band. How about a 4-2-1 branch manifold for helping you with abit of lowdown torque?

depending on what cam you go for i wouldnt expect it to do anything with a set of fortys
not looking for a crazy cam, just sort of bearable on a daily driver, only doing t40's because im getting some cheap(ish) and wont have to change my tank or looms... oh and that noise.
so u recon a 4-2-1 not a 4-1, i needed a new manifold neway, ne recommendations? or are they all simalier?

yer mine has nothing till 3.5k then just screams.
nova pilot' have you seen any prices for a lightened flywheel, as i was thinking of getting one for mine, alsoi where from?

AFAIK all aftermarket 4-2-1 and 4-1 are the same as concern's performance, suppose you just have the choice of stainless steel or mild steel.
A 285 deg cam, should be okay for road use. Ppl here even run the 295 on the road as they have the carb's setup up perfect for it, i had a 295 ast2 on my 1.2 T40 nova, carb's were setup up but not perfect as the engine would idle quite high, and so was'nt good for traffic would be worrying it would overheat

Most local engineneers and machine work shops will lighten and balance a fly wheel, i would suspect one's off the shelf from courntey and so on would be well over priced like everything else.
how much wud i get taken off then? what wieght would i be looking at? i'm thinking a 285 cam is going to be alrite, one more thing i've been thinking about is mpg! i no this can change alot with these carbs and set-ups but wots every one get roughly?

depends how you drive it i can easily do ?15 in a 40 mile trip
The only thing I can think of to give a bit morel ow end torque is 4-2-1 manifold. Another option is to go for a higher ratio final drive and close ratio box if you haven't got one already. it won't increase low end performance but will get you up to the power band a lot quicker. Tha's the next thing on my list anyway.
well i have the standard F13cr and the F10wr off my current engine (12N) i've always wondered if an F10 would run on a tuned gsi engine better, as being tuned it should run through the revs abit quicker and so lower(?) gears wouldnt be a problem and top speed would increase (not that we need it on the roads...)

For acceleration it looks like your F13CR would be the better choice.
