I was under the impression depending on how bad they were they cut rust out and slipped in a new panel then welded it to existing bodywork, ensuring arches protected etc. Wouldn;lt thought they'd just slap a bit of metal on top of the existing area, how you gonna smooth it? It would stand out a mile. Got any pics?

the rust is normally ground off then sealed, then the new panel is welded on top and smoothed in. we can smooth anything in bodyshops!
if the arch is extremely rotten it would be best to cut it out and weld the two skins back together, then weld the repair panel on top to put the shape back into it.

Err,

how much did you pay 'them'

If they just wacked a bit of metal over the old ones, then I'd expect that you payed very little.

The "proper" way is to cut the rust right back to good solid metal so there's no trace, then use a "joggler" to shape either the edge of the new panel or the car's body work, to make a lip allowing the two pieces to over lap, but for the top surface to remain flush.

The outer-facing piece has holes punched in it (using the other side of the "joggler" tool) to make spots that you "puddle weld" through to weld the two parts together.

For extra strength, the seam can be fully welded along it's length, but you can often leave it as it is with no more welding......it's only the same as spot welding as it is so little point in making it stronger in may cases.

Either way, once the welding is done, it should be ground right back flush to the body work then "solder filled" and ground to get a perfect flat smooth finish, without the use of body filler AT ALL.

I didn't know this when I did my rear arches and instead of doing it properly, I but-welded the new panel up to the original arch panel which made it easy for the panels to distort with the heat. I had to use filled to get is level 'cos of this, but if done properly, you don't get distortion and don't need to fill with anything other than solder.

A joggler will be the nest tool I buy I recon......'cos I'm gonna need it for my "full restoration" project (not the Nova).....yep..I'm finally getting the 'tina sorted!
