A couple of questions - Head and filters

First of all, how can I tell if a 1400 head is from an SR or an SRi?

Also, I am currently using a K&N bolt on filter and was wondering if anyone has ever tried manufacturing an air box for a carb and running a cone filter somewhere lower and cooler so it isn't sitting above a hot engine. Any thoughts anyone?

sr head has square inlet ports. the SRI head has round inlet ports (and maybe an EGR hole inbetween cyls 2 and 3 on the inlet side
