does it usually take a long time to warm up from cold? when i drive for about 15-20mins, the gauge is only on its first white square.

thats what i was thinking. i was going to start the engine up from cold and with the top radiator hose disconnected, look if water is leaking through the thermostat from the housing?

thanks for the reply, do you know how long it usually takes to get up to about the middle of the gauge?

The first white mark is normal operating temp.

Mine is exactly the same Only ever sits at the first mark when driving but if sat in traffic or sat still it will rise to about half way

Yep, fan kicks in at half way.
First mark after blue is normal.

For winter anyways i would imagine it runs a bit warmer in summer lol

Sorry to jump in but, is it normal for the engines to run "cold" all my novas have always ran on the cold part of the gauge when driving but would go up when sitting in traffic,

It is the same thing with my 1600 now the green light on the digi dash lights up and then no change unless I am sitting in traffic??

Oh, I allways thought it was a bit higher, maybe thats because I've allways spent a lot of time in heavy traffic though.

all my novas have been the same, first white mark for normal driving and fan kicking in at the halfway point when in traffic etc.

stat has been shagged in all of them. its not uncommon really. i mean most are a minimum of 13 years old now and its to be expected to be fair.

Stats working fine on mine, i see the guage shoot down when the stat opens.

I changed my stat today. Roughly speaking where should it be running now?

Cheers

As already said, first mark when warmed up.
Fan kicks it at half way.
If you watch the dial closely you will see it reach the first mark after maybe 2/3miles of driving, and the dial will suddenly go back down to blue as the stat opens.
Then go up the the first mark as it warms up further.
