1.3 sr gearbox in 1.2spi?

You don't exactly have close ratios in the 1.3SR box. your final drive ratio is higher. It will let accelarate a little faster and maybe lose a couple of MPH at the top. Definatly worth doing though if you can get one cheap.

Depends on space, equipment and pairs of hands available. It took me and my dad a Sunday afternoon and then finished up with the fiddley bits like gear linkage setup on a monday evening.

To get it done quick get a mate to help, put the car on axle stands and use 2 jacks if you can (one to support the engine and one to lower the box). Give your self a weekend, take your time and follow the Haynes manual.

If only it was as simple as WRC teams, 20 minutes to fit a new box!!!

haynes isnt 100% accurate for box swapping. but you should get the idea :D

am i right in saying you have to change or modify the selector too due to the conversion from 4 speed in the spi to 5 speed box

Some people have, but some haven't.
You have to a cut a little lug off the stick that stops it going into the 5th position.
