nice to see some good weight saving going on there. just finished removing all the sound deadening from the floorpan myself - about 5kg saved there i reckon.
Where did you get the harness bar that fits onto your safety devices rollcage? i asked safety devices about extending my cage but he wasnt too helpful.

what was the reasoning behind corsa pedal box? a lot better than the nova one?

what was the reasoning behind corsa pedal box? a lot better than the nova one?

Removes the balance/transfer bar assembly that runs across the bulkhead, this saves considerable weight and will improve pedal feel due to a more direct action on the Master cylinder.

I bought a bar from them that they called a dash bar (came with some fittings and stuff) i then trimmed it down to fit across the rear legs. If i did it again i'd just go to a metal stockists and buy some tube of the correct dia and paint it black :thumb:

Am doing the corsa servo mod too

Unfderstand how to drop that in and mod the brake pedal.

Looks like you have kept the standard nova clutch pedal - was much modding required? Can you post some pics showing the detail of the clutch pedal?

Thanks.

Little update, I bought a few goodies.

2nd hand AVO coilovers, gonna paint them up before i fit them

Pilbeam works strut brace :D just finished polishing the endplates and painting the bar, wanted one for ages they're like hens teeth.

2nd hand fibreglass bonnet, a few more kilo's saved :)

I will be ordering some eccentric top mounts, bias pedal box and SPA dual oil-temp/press gauge this week.

Should be getting the cage welded in later in the week or some time next week, its one thing i haven't learnt to do yet, but i got a mate that can :)

I'll post some more pics up later in the week when I've actually been to the workshop :thumb:

p.s went to the workshop the other week and thought i'd start it up seeing as i hadn't for 7 months!!!! connected the battery back up which had been left on the floor, primed the fuel pump and the bad boy fired up first time!!! well happy :) :) :)

Nice toys :).

My mum made a comment about boys and their toys lol as i was sat in the hallway unwrapping the parcel this evening.
She came out from the living room ten minutes later and i was putting the pedal box together and she said 'i'm glad we got you all that lego and meccano when you were younger' lol lol

Be prepared to do A LOT of alterations to your strut tops to stand any chance of adjustment on those top mounts fella! They look like Rally Design Spherical Bearing Eccentric mounts like mine.

Had to have them machined down by 7mm in diameter just to get 2 holes to line up! If you want more adjustment the strut top will need modding. You'll also need to have the collars drilled out to fit on the avo pistons. They will sit on the 2nd step on the piston (going bottom up) which personally, I'm not 100% happy with on mine.

Simps.

Its a fibreglass bonnet, no-one seems to make carbon ones for a nova and a one-off wouldn't be worth the expense.

20-06-06, 01:43 PM
nah i know someone who gets all his carbon fibre panles for his rally cars. they'v got like a coat of somthing on the outside part (so not carbon affect), but the otherside, you can still see the carbon (effect) which is what i want. still looks standard untill you open it and see its carbon.

All you guys chattin about AVO's and eccentric top mounts being a pain in the bumbum are obviously buying the wrong top mounts lol :p Mine fitted first time with just a 5mm spacer required beneath the bottom shim and the piston shoulder :thumb:

They will bolt up to the shock ok as long as you have the correct sized collar, but I am suprised that you've bolted them up into standard strut tops and been able to get full adjustment?? Pics would be very interesting!

I had mine machined down and they looked like yours so should be able to have the same adjustment as you but only have one option!!

TBH mine are the same, they're bolted up but i don't think i can adjust at the mo. No big deal for me, as i can do my adjustment at the tie bar and TCA for now. I will mod my strut tops in the winter, i'd rather be using the car rather than fixing it at the mo!!!:thumb:

Little update, went to the workshop today to do a few jobs, got the GSI front bumper on and thought i'd chop some triangular vents for the oil cooler like my old bumper. Except i didn't have adult supervision and had an accident with the pen knife :( Cue trip to casualty  what a retard lol

And sad news also, it won't be back on the road this year, due to limited funds. It will however be trailored to Llandow and Trax, I'm not missing Llandow for the world and I want to hit a 4.? 0-60 at Trax as well as tear up the track. :thumb:

Looked worse than it was, i panicked a bit tho, cos i was at the workshop on my own and there's no first aid box lol, i had to run around with my finger in my gob trying to find someone lol

I did a 5.36 on some really hard old tyres, should have either A048's or R888 this year and some more weight saving has happened since then too, so fingers crossed :thumb:

i have not looked at this thread before just the few photos above, so dont moan if its been answered before

but......

why do you have 'speed' holes in your rear bumper lol

dhdev (Oli)
22-08-06, 09:56 PM
The reasons are threefold General Baxter.
1. Reduced weight
2. For looks (lol )
3. Improved aerodynamic efficiency, the rear bumper acts like a giant air brake, drilling holes allows the air to escape and therefore reduces both drag and lift :thumb:

Anyway, courtesy of Novaneil and his farming associates, I'm off to do something I've wanted to for a long time.
The nova's getting weighed :D :D :D

I'll hopefully be weighing the whole car, front axle, then front axle with the rear elevated (in order to calculate CofG)

I've removed all interior trim and sound deadening etc, I've cut out all the unused brackets (eg seat mountings), I've drilled holes where possible (more to come :) ), It has a fibreglass bonnet, the windows are polycarbonate and the mechanisms for the front windows have been removed, the doors have been cut out, the bulkhead has been removed, the heater and dashboard are gone, the wiring loom has been cut-down and excess wires removed, the bumper re-inforcements are no more (just plastic bumper shells left),I have lightweight seats, I have only one mirror, the door handles are lightened, I removed the metal carpet support from the top of the exhaust tunnel and the servo and transfer bar have been removed in favour of a corsa bias pedal box.

Contrary to all that it has a full cage, bigger brakes, bigger heavier wheels, HH strengthening kit and seam welding, bigger/heavier wheels.

This winter I will hopefully fit lighter wheels (-10kgs), lighter brakes (-5kgs), lighten the shell and tailgate (-10kgs), fit a lighter battery (-5kgs) :D

Oli's Lieing.... With Driver it was well over a Ton lol

Can I have a guess??? I reckon without driver.... Ermmmm

660kg's? :D

As far as im aware he's only drilled big holes in the chassis in the rear at the moment, which has an Integral welded in cage, so its actually stronger now than when it was new.

?60 plus VAT each, they are from www.magnummotorsport.co.uk (http://www.magnummotorsport.co.uk) if you ring up and order tell them that Oli sent you :thumb:

Doors were gonna work out as too much money/time for the gain they represent, so I'll spend the time elsewhere for now ;)

And actually it is "wide-arch crap" lol i want to increase the front track width for greater turn-in and the wheels were fouling the spring platforms. So the wider arches will mean I can go lower which will help with the planned aero mods :thumb:

novashed

fair do's, its all for practical and thought out mods, hope it works dude, will 'look' very odd though, but by the looks of it looks are not the main concern just performance, which i do admire.

new bits sound exciting Oli. What brakes are you replacing? And whats the weight saving on them?

I was running Astra 16v (256mm) brakes before, replacing with wilwood dynalite (4 pot) calipers and 280mm discs. The calipers are about 4kg lighter (each) but the discs will be heavier, so probably a 5kg saving over all :)

craig green
13-01-07, 06:12 PM
5kg is a nice saving though. Unsprung weight too. Ought to help with suspension duties albeit slightly.

Autosport good?

dhdev (Oli)
13-01-07, 06:15 PM
Yeah like you say unsprung weight makes a huge difference, I'm currently looking for some lightweight wheels (Rota's, Superleggeras etc) cos I reckon I could save approx 3kgs per wheel

Autosport was ok, wouldn't have wanted to pay to get in. Once you've been for a few years its much of a muchness tbh.

Compomotive are strong rally wheels predominantly, not really lightweight. Even their 'ultralight' CXR wheel isn't actually that light.

I've yet to get the corsa pedal box working properly. I removed the servo at the same time and as a result of the lost assistance I can't generate enough system pressure to slow the car with the Astra 16v calipers and 256mm discs. To remedy this I've ordered the Wilwood dynalites with 1.75" pistons to give me greater force at the pads through hydraulic multiplication :thumb:

At last weigh in it was 660kgs.
So at rough guesstimates;
-5kgs for brakes
-7kgs for red top battery
-8kgs for tailgate
-5kgs for removed metal
-12kgs for wheels (if I can afford em!)
-0.5kgs for the mirror

So thats 37.5kgs lighter, So roughly 622.5kgs ;)

Cheers Kevster!

They were a bargain for what they are, ?352 +del for discs, calipers and all brackets bolts etc. Then you'd need pads and hoses on top of that. I got them from Rally Design ( www.raldes.co.uk (http://www.raldes.co.uk) )

Top thread Oli, just read it start to finish and my my, i though my nova was light (750kg) but yours is bloody rediculous!!

p.s. what rear brace was that originally?? Im looking to get rid of my Fearless one for a similiar shaped one that i can weld onto rear turrets

p.p.s any pics of underside or spare wheel well removal/plating up, i will be doing this soon, just wondered how you plated/braced it etc

I made the rear strut brace from a length of rollcage tubing and some plate steel I had, that was my first ever bit of welding and its lump hammer strong lol

I haven't got round to plating up the wheel well yet, still just a big hole atm, when I do I'll be sure to post piccies :thumb:

Polycarb windows were from Airedale Race components. They're fixed in as normal for the rear 3, the fronts are held in with a couple of well place bolts in the inner door frame ;)

I'm more concerned with the windscreen misting up :(

It is a trackday / weekend toy, things like windows misting up are just a niggle I live with. It has no heater so when it gets chilly the windscreen mists up! I have some anti-fog smeared on there now and that works alright. The rear windows don't get too bad if you leave one of the sliders open slightly so that a breeze blows thru. :thumb:

P.S. going to the workshop in a minute, will start it up for the first time in months and get a little video of it growling

any idea on power ? torque ???

dhdev (Oli)
11-02-07, 10:04 PM
169bhp @ 7467rpm
119lbft @ 6046rpm

It's massively held back by the mild camshafts, changing them means spending big bucks which would be better spent elsewhere though.

Driver
11-02-07, 10:06 PM
so 169 bhp and 660 kg thats 256 bhp per ton :O that thing would eat scoobies and evos for a mid mornin snack

dhdev (Oli)
11-02-07, 10:22 PM
It does ;)
reckon the figures are prob closer to 175bhp, now its loosened up and fitted with the new plugs and leads. Plus the weight is prob around 625kgs, so roughly 280bhp/tonne :D I would like to get it over the 300 marker

How have you mated this to your system?

Not a fat lot of progress cos I'm a lazy fool. But this is the status on the project with it's maiden voyage planned for brands hatch at the start of april

The work I have done is wire in a push-button starter (got rid of the ign barrel to save a few grams), wired up an FIA kill switch and pull cable (for safety), Mounted the headlights and bumper, bled the brakes, mounted the battery and removed the door handles so that I can machine a few more grams from them lol

And had a little play with my mates newly acquired toy  Will use it properly when the car is in one piece and set it up

Good work mate. cars looking well.

Wide wings dont look as bad as i thought they would tbh. Thought they may just kill the car. But looking at those pics they dont. Liking the front brake setup. possibly something i need to look into shortly as well. Moving is one thing. stopping can be entertaining.

The lights look weirdly cool would u beleive. Especially if the grill is done to suit of course. :P

Anyhow nice work mate. speak soon.

I bought approx twenty ponies from Broster today, 288deg Newman cams. This should bring me down below 13.5 on the quarter and deep into the 4's 0-60 :D
