The rear beam plates when performing rear disc conversion on Nova.

Obviously some fairly beefy welds are required when attaching the new end plates to the beam. Ive got access to both welders & wondered whats best. i dont usually associate MIG with big hefty metal work.

Thats what I was thinking, thanks Stu.

Does anyone MIG it out of interest?

From looking through various catalouges of welders, Mig's seem to only be capable of welding up to 12mm thick mild steel, And you have to spend 4-500 to get that sort of power.

My Dads MIG isnt particularly powerfull, usual home garage job. He has ARC too. I'm thinking ARC is the way to go. It'll be perfectly comfortable with the gauge of steel on the beam etc & its the easiest to use. My MIG experience is limited tbh.

I would use an arc welder for the rear beam too, ships are generally welded together by arc's, so it must be capable of welding some pretty thick material!!

Ye, for thick steel, Arc welder is what you want.
I know Arc easily burns holes straight through a couple of mm thick steel(that you use a Mig welder on)

i know of people who can (and are licensed to) weld 50mm steel with mig lol

i use arc for strong welds, eg thick metal, roll cage and mig for bodywork, eg sills etc
