gte clocks in mk1 1.2 nova

when i put the gte clocks in and connected everything up then turn on the ignition, just the fuel guage goes of the top of a full tank. ive tested my mates one and it does the same.when i put the mk1 1.2 clocks in the fuel gauge reads normal so i guess i have to change some wires.
do i need to change any wires to get it working.

I remember reading somewhere you need the GTE fuel sender unit or something, not sure how correct that is though

I stuck a set of gte dials into a mk1 1.2 & it worked fine. maybe there is a short somewhere? or the gauge might be faulty. check the sender with a multimeter, and if that is ok then it is the gauge

The resistance of the gauge and the sender are not matched
