View Full Version : sticking a nova on its side...
After reading ALL of JOFF's nova rebuild recently (inspiring - the mans a god!) it got me thinking about me (stalled) rebuild. I really need to get to the underside of my nova because I know the floor sealant has failed in places and needs replacing. I also need access to bits n bons under there.
So - whats the best way of tipping a NOva on its side without damaging the panels?
Seen Joff do it and he seemed to rest the shell on old tyres supporting the underside with a large fence post!
Does anyone else have a suitable option?
Obviously the car will be stripped right down (interior, engine etc) and I figure I'll leave the wheels and suspension inplace - for now...
So - for those that have dont it (need proper advice as I dont wanna wreck my car) whats the best way to do it.
I recall ages ago CP (I think) making some mad rotating cradle think trhat bolted to the bumper bar points!
Bearing in mind I currently dont have access to a welder/box steel.
Ade
You can get some kind of frame thing, that allows you to rotate the car. Not sure who/where has one tho.
i beleave it was ste who made basically two L shape turn over bars which he bolted to the bumper points and flipped it over. was very impressive
Yep, it was Ste.

This one can be attacthed to the bumper mounting points and needs a little less room to operate chassis tilter (http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=9023)
I made some frame a couple of years ago (copied STE's idea !) that bolted to the bumper mounts ....

If you added some castors to those ric you could wheel it in and out of the garage like that.

The word your looking for is a "Spit"
These are commonly used for building competition cars and vary in design depending on the car and the work thats to be carried out on the chassis once its rotated.
You can buy these, but as to how good they are I dont know. We make our own spits to suit each car. Id be weary of building your own though, its obviously very important that its structurally sound and will clear the ground once the car is upside down.
I wouldnt advise working on a car thats only propped up by a piece of timber, it could easily fall on top of you.

Uphill welding LMao!
Its a great idea though. I was talking to a novabuddy the other day about spraying the underside of mine body colour like the concourse cossie boys do.
best way on a car tilter/spit me thinks.

...spraying the underside of mine body colour like the concourse cossie boys do...
This is all very well if the car is trailered to shows and never driven on the road. Painted floors chip and then rust very quickly. Underseal it or you'll be forever repainting...
