Carpets?

Spraying it might work, probably take a lot of cans to get a good covering tho.

err - actually some of the GSi and GTE models came with black (well very dark charcoal) carpets - I actually got a black carpet from an old Nova Flair from a scrappy.

Antibes had a red carpet!

Look about - they are out there...

As for dying - you cant really do that because the material is man made and wont dye well - also spraying make it do all crusty and hard.

If you cant find one, get some bass box speaker material (the heave duty stuff) and cut it to fit.

Yup, my H reg 2dr saloon came with very dark grey carpet...

I think acoustic carpet would probably be quite expensive for the amount you need.

it does state carpets but not sure what the end result would be as ade said it will go crusty but im not sure

What should work is vinyl dye, its specifically for dying plastics, and isnt a paint so should'nt wear off. I'd imagine spray paint to wear off a carpet quite easily. Spray a test section somewhere out of sight, like under one of the front seats, or mats :thumb:

no ive emaild him and he said it will work wonders on carpets and will not leave a crusty texture he said it will obsorb in 2 the carpets
im defo finking of geting a can and trying on an old pice of carpet

I use all Autoglym products on my valets and the black carpet dye will work a treat. I suggest removing the carpet, jetwashing it clean, leaving it to dry then spray a coat, leave to dry, spray another coat and so on.

Worked well on my boot carpet, and that was just a quick job !

Best bet is to buy another carpet from a scrappy and use that.

That way your in no hurry to finish the job and can do it right !

Should only take 1-2 days to dry out completely !

well 2day i actully got round two trying out the auto glym dye
what can i say im very dissapointed
i tryed two dye my parcel shelf as this is the same material as my carpets.
I use the 1 whole can i brought thinking that would be enuff but it wasent. When i asked the geezer about this spray he said my carpets would only need 2 cans as the carpet/material will obsorbe the dye like fook does it obsorbe the dye it bloody drinks it
so i reckon i will need another can of this stuff 2 finish off my parcel shelf so would imadgion a carpet would take around 8 depending on the colour of the carpet (mines a creamy colour)
As you can see from the pic its a bit patchy still

ive just been thinking i wonder if i could buy some cloths dye put it in a squirty bottle (mr mussel type) add water give it a good shake and apply it 2 the carpets or is that just a silly idea?

could be a good idea with the clothes dye mate, i done a jacket black ages ago(like a year)so its had fair amount of washes and hasnt faded one bit worth a try anyway, let me know if it works coz i have just got some carpets 2 try dye myself :)

Matt black rattle can, about ?2 a tin. Used about 3-4 cans iirc. Just lashed it on.

Yes the carpet does go all crusty but most of it is covered up by mats and how often do you stroke your carpets anyway??!! Doesn't look crusty tho.

Got mine from my local motor factors. Just matt black aerosol. Will rub off after a while I suppose but just spray it again.

i get the auto glm dye for about ?4 a can at trade price used 3 on my carpet trick is to do really light coats if u flood it will just soak in

Dash is a GSi one so black already. Swapped them when I swapped the seats for the leather ones. Also used GSi door cappings, 1/4's and shelf supports. Retrimmed the door cards myself with acoustic carpet.

well finally got round 2 trying the cloths dye yesterday i only gave it a light coat and it looks a little blacker then it did with the auto glym stuff.
The parcel shelf is still kinda wet so wating for it 2 dry out and will give it another coat of the dye

its crap came home from work 2day and checked my parcelshelf and where the dyes dryed its gone like a white powder i realy dont know what two do i might just get a black carpet out of another vauxhall and cut two size

As the carpet is just a nylon moulding I'd maybe try the etching radio control car paint (pactra) stuff. Would probably etch itself on for permanent coverage. Bit more expensive than cellulose cans.

i doubt any of these dyes will work to a decent standard, the reason being that the carpet is an acrylic mix. therfore if you look at a fibre under a microscope it is smooth and non absorbant unlike animal fibre or hair which is made from plates where the dye is absorbed so from a distacnce it looks like the whole fibre has been coloured.

so any dye or paint which is applied will eventually rub off and transfer to things which ar rubbed on it.

now, this may work. clear plastic primer is available from a bodyshop suppliers and it works by melting the surface of the plastic its applied to. so it may be possible to make a mix using plastic primer and black paint which may melt to the original carpet fibres and prove to be more hard waring than the dye. cheaper than buying loads of cans too if you have a compressor.

or, somebody put a link up ages ago for a company. i think its called coverdale carpets. they made carpet sets for loads of cars. do a search for there site.

black paint from halfords bought gloss stuff so could use it on my dash looks ok may need another lick o paint tho

I also done mine today, used matt black from helfords and some old black we had with the sprey gun, bit crusty, not to much, be ok if i used black matts which i have, although warning if you hover ya car out it could fade it abit grey. Pics up soon.
