View Full Version : What speeds in which gears?

I have just been out for a blat in the '88 1.2 merit and I was wondering what sorts of speeds it is safe to go up to in each gear.
I currently go up to:
30mph from 1st
45mph from 2nd
60mph from 3rd
70mph from 4th
and run out of guts at 100mph as it sounds like its about to throw a rod.

The engine has done 60000 miles, 8000 of those were me breaking it in as my mum used to have this car and change into 5th at 40mph....

Has anyone else had one of these and what did you get out of it?
Cheers, Dan

what gearbox is it (eg F10/13 C/Wr), What is the final drive in there, What size are your tyres and do you have a rev counter.

prob get 90 in 3rd in my box at 7krpm.
Others won't even get that in fourth.

As said it depend on cluster and Final drive ratio.

mine seemed low when i first got it when i actually tried to see what i could get out of it, seemed low speed in first and not alot in 2nd but i was used to a bigger engine car, but i have had this reading where 130 would be on the clock dunno how realistic that is but certainly felt about right compared to previous cars

Your 2nd/3rd/4th gear sound like a low top speed.
What rpm was that at?
30mph in first is getting towards 7k rpm,Lol. Probably around 6800rpm.

I have a F10/4 with a 3.94 fd, and get about 50 ish in 2nd, and probably about 75-80mph in 3rd gear.
Sounds like you have a close ratio box.

I'm not sure what box it is and I dont have the rev counter, hence why I dont want to take it too far. Its running 195 60 14 tyres, soon to be 185 50 14s. Ill get the 'box code for you guys, is this on the gearbox or will it be in the manual/handbook? Thanks, Dan

Code's on the end of the gearbox, behind pass. side wheel, on one of the machined surfaces at the bottom, may need a bit of cleaning before you can read it.

On the limiter, 6200rpm in a SPI, in 4th, is about 110-115mph real speed.
Probably right off the clock on the speedo.

A Std 1.2spi probably wouldn't reach the limiter in 4th.

I just happen to be one of these people who actually tried this lol, All of these are indicated speeds on my clock.

1400 SR (F10 close ratio):

1st: 32mph?
2nd: 60mph
3rd: 80mph (ish)
4th: 105mph
5th: 120mph

SRlew

1300, F10/5W/4.18, 195/50x15's - 125mph indicated in fith at 7000rpm, down a well known very big hill in north yorks.

not really down to engine. Box is an F13 WR with a 3.74FD so its very low geared compared to an F13 CR.

Still spins in 2nd though. (which is about the same as An CR's 3rd gear with a 3.94FD)

Might have only been 6000, only glanced at the revs as there was a transit coming toward me and I was overtaking some coffin dodgers! saying that I think it sounds like I was the one dodging the coffin!! Poor things just sat on the street waiting for me to decide whether to put a new block in or rebuild the 1.3 now.

my old 1400 was about 34 in first --- 61 in second ..dono bout other gears but had it at about 120 and not flat to to the mat

6000rpm in 4th is about 110ish, real speed.

Ah I remember when I was a young lad & actually believed that if the car had a 130mph speedo, it could really do it.......
a std 1.2 nova will only do about 90mph, on the flat. it can't do any more
a std 1.3 maybe 95-100
a std 1.4 100-110
a std 1.6 120 (it hits the rev limiter
a 2.0 16v 140

Last week I got a John deere tractor to do 56mph downhill.that is twice its speed on the flat

You wouldnt get a standard sri to hit the limiter in 5th without some serious mods.

1st 20, 2nd 40, 3rd 55, 4th 80, 5th i've had an indicated 105mph down hill. its a 1.2 with no tach, I couldnt hear the engine because of the wind noise so I backed off. I think its an f10 box, i'll check tomorrow.

yes you can, my old sri, easily went to the limiter in 5th, all that had was a full exhaust and filter

That must be at quite low revs? Well, low as in about 5k rpm,Lol.

It's not my car, so I'm fairly cautious in that respect. Those are the speeds I change up, unless I'm cruising behind something. I've taken it faster in some of the lower gears by mistake, but try not to, just incase :)

Once its registered and insured in my name, a tach is high on my list.

95mph at approx 5400rpm on 195/45R15. 89k on the clocks. Just wondering what she can do at the rev limit 6600rpm :D

Felt very sturdy tho must admit was very surprised too.

Think its an F10
