well ive got a few noisy tappets on my mk 1 1.2 im just wondering if its a straight foward job?

get the gm cam removal tool off ebay for ?10. Take hte followers off each valve. remove the lifters/tappets (same thing diff names) either replcae with new ones OR refurb your existing ones. should take you about half a day.

Haynes manual has a good guide to re-furb the lifters.
I did it to mine, and mine are still silent now, 2K miles later.
They were a right racket before i cleaned them.

and how would i go about cleaning them

there is a ring round the toip of the outer cylinder that you pop off with a slim screwdriver. You then pull the plunger out and keep the spring that coems out. you can then pop off the little cap at the bottom of the plungeer and keep the spring and ball from thre. soak it all in thinners etc and maybe a gentle linishing of the plunger sides with 1500 grit wet and dry covered in oil. then reassemble. fill with fresh oil and voila

Use brake/clutch cleaner to clean them.
