I Saw on ebay a while ago, some Webber 40 turbo carbs ?

I can't remember what car they were off exactly, could have been some form of renault alpina or a lotus ? (early esprit ?)

Was this an "ebay scam" ?

Also, i'm guess you can't just adapt 40's with somekinda flange and shove 15psi worth of boost through them ?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm not doing this on my 1.6T40 but have been offered another 1.6 lump with a pair of webbers for cheapo.

Could make an interesting and different project if it's possible. And yes, i understand it's probably easier (and tried and tested) to use the EFi and aftrmarket managment.

Cheers Nick

How much is the other 1.6 with 40s going for??? :):):) lol

Not sure how it would work, but IIRC renault 5 gtt use a carb and not efi, so it can be done.

Yer some of the FRST used a uprated webber twinchoke ? could be wrong but someone mentioned that !

Well it's basically the price of a pair of half decent webbers with the engine attatched for free ! i'l let you know about it if i say no :-)

Same principle as a TB'd turbo I suppose!

Would just need to make up an airbox so its airtight. Toughest part would be designing a box with the correct flow properties.

Dellorto produced a turbo version of the DHLA carbs, main difference from normal being the float chamber is open to the increased air pressure, rather than just to atmosphere.

The carbs in question will not work under positive pressure. Dellorto did some that were properly sealed & wotnot. Boost would pressurise the float & flood the engine if you tried.
there was a Nova SR in MAAAX POWER years ago that had a 2.0 8v turbo on Dellorto's. Was built & owned by some scruffy, grey bearded old geezer.... (hope he's not on here)!

Renaults use a Solex carb on the GTT & such like.

yes early lotus esprit's had twin 40's and they are turbo'd. i beleave you can by all the sealing rings to convert normal 40's then you just have to find a way to get the boost pressure into the float chamber aswell, then job done

make a mahoooooosive plenum and mount the carbs inside it..... but then that would totally gay up the airflow/turbo properties.

So....

To sum up...

Dont bother

or you could make a draw threw system, which means having the turbo suck threw the carbs

mmmm hot turbo, fuel.... yay lol. I know tis done but its a really ropey way of doing it.

For the effort involved and lack of power it will allow its better to go EFI for this

cheers stu...

i was just pondering anyhow, but i think after seeing that finnish guys 1.6 Turbo on the EFi, i may well end up doing that one day

if you want forced induction fit an engine thats got it and play around with that - its a relatively pricey and difficult thing to get right. For a starters you've got to fight detonation which means forged pistons, lower CR,different con rods, worries about head gaskets, oil feeds to the turbo, getting it fuelled right so it doesnt run lean and burn holes in the pistons etc - the list goes on. If you run on low safe boost you get indifferent performance for the money invested. If you run higher boost you get reliability problems, and problems with lag, problems with heat etc etc. Running turbos on petrol engines is a way different proposition to strapping a blower on an oil burner. Blowing or wotever through carbs is just another headache and in any event its easier to increase boost to overcome deficiencies in induction design than it is to fook about modding carbs which aren't designed for forced induction in the first place. Engine + Carbs+ Turbo doesn't = twice the performance gains just twice the headaches.

But i could be wrong lol
